Don Lemon: Get a Gun and Prepare to Fight ICE

At least there’s this: Don Lemon has discovered a newfound respect for the Second Amendment. 

That’s the only good thing you can say about his recommendation to all people with more melanin than an albino: that they go out and purchase a firearm and prepare to fight it out with ICE or CBP agents who are working to deport illegal aliens from the country.

It’s an odd pitch that he is making, and it sure appears to be a call for violence against federal officers. 

On the one hand, he does emphasize that the firearms and carry permits be obtained legally–that is good!–but on the other hand, he sure seems to imply that law enforcement needs to learn a lesson that can only be taught to them through the use of the weapons, presumably on them. 

The comments came in a conversation on Wajahat Ali’s podcast “Left Hook.”

 Black people, brown people of all stripes, whether you’re an Indian American or a Mexican American or whoever you are, go out in your place where you live and get a gun. Legally get a license to carry legally, because when you have people knocking on your door. And taking you away without due process as a citizen.

Isn’t that what the Second Amendment was written for? Hmm. Go back and read what the Second Amendment says, and perhaps it will knock some sense in the head, in the heads of these people who are saying, well, it’s all great. I don’t believe they’re doing it without due process. They’re asking people for papers.

They’re not really beating people up. These people are doing things that are illegal. Nobody is illegal. It is a misdemeanor to cross the border.

The whole rant is something of a mess, with much of what he is saying completely wrong. No lawyer, for instance, would recommend you take potshots at law enforcement officers even if they are doing something that turns out to be wrong or illegal, and having taken gun safety classes for people applying to get a carry permit, I can assure you that Second Amendment advocates do not recommend doing so either. 

Don Lemon, though, is not the brightest bulb in the universe, nor does he ever know what he is talking about. He clearly doesn’t understand due process or what constitutes a crime. 

But two things in particular stick out from this rant: the first, the phrase “knock some sense into their head,” which, when married to the “get a gun” advice, suggests that people engage in violence; the second, that entering the country illegally is not a crime. 

It is. The claim that a misdemeanor is not a crime is, in fact, false. People go to jail for misdemeanors, although, since Democrats think that even felonies should rarely be prosecuted, it is unsurprising that Lemon is unaware of this fact. 

Lastly, nobody wants to house every illegal alien in jail; what people want is for them to be deported, which is not a punishment for the crime of entering or remaining in the country illegally, but the natural consequence of being here illegally. If a police officer removes a trespasser from my property and then allows them to leave, the trespasser was not punished for committing the crime of trespass, but merely prevented from continuing to commit that crime going forward. 

It’s not that hard to understand, really. The whole “nobody is illegal” line is incoherent, but emotionally compelling to people who respond to emotional appeals without thinking. 

But, I suppose, you can’t expect Don Lemon to be rational. 

My recommendation to people of melanin: go ahead and get a gun, get training, and your permit to carry if you can do so legally. An armed society is a polite society. 

Also, don’t aim at or shoot law enforcement officers. It’s wrong, illegal, and a good way to get yourself killed. 

And, of course, ignore Don Lemon. He is an idiot.
