President Donald Trump was met with cheers from the crowd at the U.S. Open men’s final in Queens, New York, on Sunday, becoming just the second sitting president to attend the event.

Trump arrived at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to watch the championship match between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

During the National Anthem, Trump appeared on the Jumbotron, drawing a loud reaction from the crowd.

While a White House pool report from The Independent’s John Bowden claimed the audience responded with boos, video broadcast from the event captured cheers when Trump was shown on the screen.

The administration’s Rapid Response account criticized the pool report in a statement.

“All these Fake News Losers do is lie because their pea-sized brains have been irreversibly destroyed by TDS,” the account wrote in reply to Bowden’s reporting.

According to the official pool report, “Sgt. Maj. Carla Loy stepped out and began the anthem at 2:31 p.m. Trump’s face appeared on the big screen at 2:32 p.m. in the stadium, promoting a wave of boos during the anthem.”

The White House’s media team pushed back, insisting that the report selectively omitted the cheers that were audible in live coverage.

ABC noted that Trump is just the second sitting president to attend the U.S. Open, adding to the list of major sporting events he has made a point of attending since returning to the White House.

Following his victory in the 2024 election, Trump began appearing at high-profile competitions, starting with UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden shortly after Election Day, where he was greeted by chants from the crowd.

In February 2025, Trump attended the Super Bowl and later traveled to the Daytona 500, where he took part in the ceremonial pacing of the field before the race.

His sports appearances have also included the NCAA wrestling championship in March, UFC 316 in June, and the FIFA Club Championship final in July.

Trump’s attendance at these events has drawn significant public attention and media coverage, often sparking debate over crowd reactions and the accuracy of reports surrounding them.

His latest appearance at the U.S. Open continued that pattern, as the White House sought to correct what it described as misleading narratives in press accounts.

The men’s final itself featured two of tennis’s youngest stars, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Italy’s Jannik Sinner, who competed for one of the sport’s most prestigious titles.

While the match captivated the sporting world, Trump’s presence in Queens marked a continuation of his practice of appearing before large sporting crowds across the country.
