The case for America First has never been stronger.
In the wake of two historic hurricanes, Helene and Milton, former President Donald Trump has an opportunity to win over not just more conservatives but centrists and independents who are tired of American politicians selling out their country. However, to do so, Trump needs to acknowledge two realities: first, that the Republican Party is not as pro-Union as it claims to be; second, that foreign aid must end not only for Ukraine but also for Israel, a country that has received over $300 billion in U.S. aid, mostly for its military, since 1946. Republicans have long talked a big game about putting America and her workers first. Yet they are still passing $60 billion aid packages for Ukraine, and most recently, House Republicans introduced a bill that would give the federal government more power to crush unions after thousands of dockworkers on the East Coast launched a strike earlier in October.
Republicans were largely silent about the historic longshoremen strike, or else they nitpicked union president Harold Daggett’s near seven-figure salary, saving none of their vitriol for the foreign companies that were exploiting American workers. But not Trump. Much to his credit, Trump came out strong for the workers.
“American workers should be able to negotiate for better wages, especially since the shipping companies are mostly foreign flag vessels, including the largest consortium ONE,” the former president said.
Fuhgeddaboud Daggett’s salary, his extravagant home, his alleged mob ties! Fuhgeddaboudit! The real story here was that a foreign company was bullying American workers, and most Republicans didn’t seem to care.
Then there’s the issue of foreign aid, which Republicans must address in the aftermath of a hurricane that decimated the Southeast. The fact that America has sent billions and billions of dollars abroad, and yet we’re having a conversation about FEMA running out of money, is an absolute scandal. Israel. Egypt. Afghanistan. Ukraine. Billions and billions and billions. Trillions.
There is no way around it, no way for the establishment to justify it: FEMA running low on funds after spending more than a billion on illegal migrants, but Israel and Ukraine bilking Uncle Sam for decades is, simply, beyond the pale. No American, whether Republican or Democrat, should feel comfortable knowing that the Ukrainians and Israelis can get all the money they need to fight their wars, but the citizens of this country who need disaster relief, many of whom are about to get walloped by a category 4 hurricane, may be out of luck in the coming months.
This is the perfect time for Trump to take America First to the next level. The most important issues the country is facing are now at the forefront. The media cannot ignore the natural disasters in North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Americans are crying out for a political party that isn’t so nakedly corrupt and beholden to corporate and foreign interests, a party that puts its forgotten workers and hurricane victims first. But taking America First to a new level for the rest of the GOP means proudly backing American workers, even if it costs you politically with big corporate donors and lobbyists, and turning off the aid spigot for Ukraine, Israel and all other countries.
