President Donald Trump on Monday announced a sweeping federal intervention in Washington, D.C., aimed at addressing violent crime, gang activity, and public disorder in the nation’s capital, as reported by The New York Post.
The move includes deploying the National Guard to city streets and placing the Metropolitan Police Department under temporary federal control.

“You spit, and we hit. They can hit real hard.”
Trump noted that the D.C. National Guard falls under his direct authority, unlike National Guard units in the states, which are commanded by governors. He said that if necessary, active-duty military personnel could also be deployed to assist local law enforcement.

Under the District of Columbia Home Rule Act of 1973, the president can direct the Metropolitan Police Department for federal purposes for up to 30 days.
Trump said the move was part of a broader goal to make the city “one of the safest, cleanest, and most beautiful cities anywhere in the world.”
The president announced that homeless encampments would be removed from all public areas, including parks and underpasses. He also directed the U.S. Park Police, under the supervision of Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, to oversee the removal of graffiti.
“It’s becoming a situation of complete and total lawlessness, and we get rid of the slums too,” Trump said.
“We have slums here. We get rid of them. I know it’s not politically correct. You’ll say, oh, so terrible. No. We get rid of the slums where they live, caravans of mass youth rampage through city streets at all times of the day.”

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has recently implemented curfews in parts of the city to keep minors off the streets, in some cases as early as 7 p.m. She has argued that crime rates are falling, but President Trump disputed her claims, calling the reported statistics “phony.”
He said Attorney General Pam Bondi will be reviewing the data.
Trump framed the crackdown as both a law enforcement and public safety measure, signaling that it would remain in effect until violent crime, gang activity, and public disorder are significantly reduced.
