President-elect Donald Trump announced the appointment of retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg as his Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia, tasking him with working towards a resolution of the ongoing war between the two nations.

The nearly three-year-long conflict has escalated tensions globally, and Trump has expressed a strong desire to bring it to an end.

“I am very pleased to nominate General Keith Kellogg to serve as Assistant to the President and Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia,” Trump said on Truth Social. “Keith has led a distinguished Military and Business career, including serving in highly sensitive National Security roles in my first Administration. He was with me right from the beginning! Together, we will secure PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH, and Make America, and the World, SAFE AGAIN!”

Kellogg, 80, has had a long career in both the military and national security roles, including serving as the National Security Adviser to Vice President Mike Pence during the Trump administration.

His extensive experience in military strategy and foreign policy will play a crucial role in Trump’s approach to resolving the war in Ukraine.

In April, Kellogg co-authored a research paper outlining his approach to bringing the war to a conclusion.

The paper recommended that a future U.S. administration should continue to arm Ukraine and strengthen its defenses to prevent further Russian advances.

Kellogg also suggested that the U.S. should avoid granting NATO membership to Ukraine in the short term, which would serve as a diplomatic move to encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate.

In exchange for this approach, Kellogg’s paper advocated for a comprehensive peace deal that includes security guarantees for Ukraine.

While the paper’s recommendations align with Trump’s desire to work towards peace, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made it clear that Ukraine will not agree to a ceasefire that requires it to relinquish any territory, a point that will likely remain a sticking point in negotiations.

Kellogg’s career has been marked by his leadership in national security and foreign affairs.

During the first Trump administration, he served as the chief of staff and executive secretary of the U.S. National Security Council (NSC).

After Michael Flynn’s resignation as National Security Adviser, Kellogg briefly held the acting position before H.R. McMaster was appointed as Flynn’s permanent successor.

Kellogg’s background in national security and diplomacy is extensive, having worked in both the military and in high-level policy roles.

His deep understanding of global security concerns will be instrumental as Trump’s administration looks to shift away from the current U.S. strategy under Joe Biden, which has focused on arming Ukraine and providing strong support to its fight against Russian aggression.

The appointment of Kellogg as Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia is a clear indication of President-elect Trump’s commitment to negotiating a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Trump has repeatedly stated his desire to bring the war to an end, focusing on strong diplomatic engagement rather than continued military escalation.

As Trump prepares for his second term, his approach to the Ukraine-Russia conflict will undoubtedly be one of the most pressing foreign policy issues he faces.

With Kellogg at the helm of these efforts, there is hope that a peaceful solution may be within reach, even as challenges remain with key aspects of the negotiation, including the territorial disputes and the broader geopolitical consequences of the war.

Kellogg’s role will be critical as the U.S. seeks to reassert its influence on the global stage, particularly in its dealings with Russia and Ukraine.

The outcomes of his efforts could play a pivotal role in shaping U.S. foreign policy and its approach to international conflicts in the years ahead.
