President Donald Trump received a rousing reception Thursday night at Yankee Stadium as he appeared during a pregame ceremony marking the 24th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

As the national anthem was performed by a member of the New York City Fire Department, the stadium’s video board cut to Trump standing in the crowd and saluting.

The audience erupted into applause and broke into chants of “USA! USA!” that carried across the ballpark.

The moment marked one of Trump’s most visible public appearances since returning to office earlier this year.

Before the game, Trump visited the Yankees clubhouse, where he met with star outfielder Aaron Judge.

The President shook hands with the 6-foot-7 slugger and joked, “I wish he was a little bit bigger,” before adding, “You have that much muscle you have to hit the ball far.” Judge, a former league MVP, is among the most recognizable players in Major League Baseball.

The Yankees had confirmed Trump’s attendance earlier in the week, announcing on social media:

“President Donald J. Trump scheduled to attend Yankees-Tigers game on September 11 at Yankee Stadium … The New York Yankees and the White House today announced that President Donald J. Trump is scheduled to attend the Yankees-Tigers game on Thursday, September 11 at Yankee Stadium. Pregame ceremonies will recognize the victims and heroes of 9/11.”

The ceremony included tributes to first responders and those lost in the attacks.

Members of the New York City Fire Department and Police Department participated in the pregame program, which concluded with the anthem that prompted the stadium-wide ovation when Trump appeared on the screen.

The game itself carried added significance for New Yorkers, taking place on the anniversary of the attacks that reshaped the city and the nation.

Trump, a lifelong New Yorker, has long been connected to the city’s history and was frequently seen at Yankee Stadium and other sports venues before his presidency.

The Yankees are currently competing for a postseason berth in the American League.

Entering Thursday’s matchup against the Detroit Tigers, the team trailed the Toronto Blue Jays in the division standings but remained in position for a wild-card spot as the regular season nears its conclusion.

Trump’s appearance came as part of a full day of commemorative events across the country.

Memorial services were held in New York City, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon, honoring the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001.

For those in attendance at Yankee Stadium, the moment provided both a remembrance of the tragedy and a show of national pride.

The chants that followed Trump’s salute underscored the significance of the evening for many in the crowd.

The White House did not provide additional details on Trump’s schedule following the game.

However, his visit to Yankee Stadium was highlighted in coverage of the anniversary ceremonies as a notable instance of the President appearing before a large public audience in New York.
