Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy questioned White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday about Joe Biden’s plans to remain in the public eye after leaving office.

Washington DC USA – 7-9-2024 – White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defends President Biden’s health at the daily press briefing

The exchange took place during a press briefing at the White House.

Doocy referenced Biden’s statement during a Friday press conference, where the president vowed not to be “out of sight, out of mind” after his departure from the Oval Office on January 20.

The remark raised questions about whether voters, who elected President-elect Donald Trump in the 2024 race, want Biden to stay politically relevant.

“President Biden says he’s not gonna be ‘out of sight, out of mind.’ But, isn’t that what voters basically said that they wanted — is him gone?” Doocy asked.

Jean-Pierre responded by highlighting Biden’s extensive public service career, spanning more than five decades.

“So, look, this is a president that has served more than 50 years,” Jean-Pierre said.

“Who has given all of himself if you will as a public servant, whether as a senator, as a local elected official, as vice president and now as president. I think anybody who has served that long and does it from their heart and soul because they believe this country deserves so much more, they believe that the American people deserve more and has worked day in and day out, certainly as president the last four years, I think deserves some respect. I think he deserves some respect.”

Doocy also pressed Jean-Pierre about the future leadership of the Democratic Party heading into the 2028 election cycle.

“That is for people much smarter than I to make that assessment, that decision,” Jean-Pierre replied. “Obviously, voters will decide. That is not for me to decide. I can say right now in this moment, in this room … you have the president, President Joe Biden, who is obviously the leader of the Democratic Party. I cannot predict the future and that is not something I’m not gonna do from here.”

The questions come as Biden prepares to leave office following his decision to exit the 2024 presidential race.

The decision was influenced by pressure from nearly 40 members of his own party, who raised concerns about his age and mental fitness after his performance during the June 27 presidential debate.

Kamala Harris subsequently ran as the Democratic nominee but lost to Trump, who secured 312 electoral votes in the general election.

Despite his decision to withdraw from the race, Biden has expressed regret. In an interview with the Washington Post, he stated, “I would have beat Trump” if he had remained in the race.

Biden’s approval rating stands at 35.6% as of Monday, with his disapproval rating at 57%, according to FiveThirtyEight.

These numbers underscore the challenges faced by his administration in the final days of his presidency.

The president’s remarks and Doocy’s questions highlight ongoing debates about Biden’s legacy and the direction of the Democratic Party as the nation transitions to new leadership under President-elect Trump.
