The House of Representatives held a vote Friday on a resolution honoring the life and legacy of Charlie Kirk, the conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, who was assassinated earlier this year.

Nearly 60 Democratic lawmakers opposed the measure, while more than 200 Republicans and close to 100 Democrats backed it.

The resolution, which condemned “in the strongest possible terms” Kirk’s assassination, also commended law enforcement authorities for arresting and charging the individual accused of carrying out the killing.

It extended condolences to Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, and the couple’s two young children.

In addition, the measure recognized Kirk’s “steadfast dedication to the Constitution, civil discourse, and Biblical truth,” crediting him with inspiring “a generation to cherish and defend the blessings of liberty.”

The text also urged Americans “to reject political violence, recommit to respectful debate, uphold American values, and respect one another as fellow Americans.”

Among those voting against the resolution were several prominent Democrats, including four members from New York: Reps. Yvette Clarke, Adriano Espaillat, Nydia Velazquez, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Three Democrats from New Jersey also voted against it: Reps. Robert Menendez, Bonnie Watson Coleman, and LaMonica McIver.

Their opposition stood out given the bipartisan support the measure received overall.

In total, 215 Republicans voted in favor, joined by 95 Democrats.

On the other side, 59 Democrats voted against the resolution, 38 voted “present,” and 22 did not cast a vote.

The breakdown highlighted a sharp partisan divide over a measure that Republican leaders presented as a symbolic but important gesture honoring Kirk’s work and condemning political violence.

The resolution followed weeks of public mourning and tributes across the country.

Kirk, who rose to national prominence as the founder of Turning Point USA, was widely recognized for his activism on college campuses and his influence in conservative media.

His death sparked widespread reactions from political leaders, faith communities, and young activists who credited him with shaping debates around free speech and conservative values in education and politics.

The Democrats who voted against the resolution did not issue a joint statement explaining their opposition.

Several members who voted “present” likewise refrained from comment.

For supporters of the resolution, the vote served as both a condemnation of political violence and a recognition of Kirk’s work.

Republican lawmakers argued the measure was necessary to affirm Congress’s commitment to civil debate and to send a unified message against violence in the political arena.

The resolution now stands as the official statement of the House honoring Charlie Kirk’s life and legacy.

While the measure does not carry the force of law, it represents the institution’s formal acknowledgment of Kirk’s contributions and a call for Americans to reject violence as a tool of political conflict.

Donald Trump weighed in after the vote:

🚨 President Trump just SLAMMED Democrats for voting against the resolution condemning Charlie Kirk’s kiIIing

“Who could vote against that?! All they’re saying is ‘please condemn the assassination of a human being’ and they said, ‘No, we’re not going to do that.’”
