Bogalusa Mayor Tyrin Truong, a 25-year-old Democrat and the youngest mayor in the city’s history, was arrested on Tuesday following a months-long investigation into a sophisticated drug trafficking operation.

The investigation, conducted by the Louisiana State Police Narcotics/Violent Crime Task Force, uncovered connections between illegal drug distribution, firearms sales, and prostitution.

The investigation began in April 2022, focusing on a drug trafficking organization that law enforcement officials described as “comprehensive and far-reaching.”

The operation allegedly utilized social media platforms for payment processing and distribution of illegal substances, including opioids, high-grade marijuana, THC products, and MDMA.

Authorities revealed that the profits from the drug sales were used to purchase firearms, which were then sold to individuals legally prohibited from owning them.

Some of these weapons have been linked to violent crimes in the area, according to police reports.

Mayor Truong now faces several charges, including transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses, unauthorized use of a moveable, and soliciting for prostitution.

Truong, who was elected in 2022, has been the subject of intense scrutiny as this investigation unfolded.

The task force’s investigation also led to the issuance of seven arrest warrants, with six other individuals facing charges related to drug trafficking proceeds.

Three of these suspects have been charged with conspiracy to distribute a Schedule I controlled substance, while others face additional charges of distributing a Schedule II controlled substance.

Louisiana has faced significant challenges in combatting drug-related crimes.

In 2023, the state recorded 2,456 drug-involved deaths, underscoring the urgent need for law enforcement efforts to curb illegal drug activity.

District Attorney Collin Sims commented on the investigation, emphasizing the continued commitment to addressing criminal activity in the area.

“We are going to continue to invest time and resources into helping the citizens of Bogalusa,” Sims stated. “We are not finished.”

The Louisiana State Police indicated that more arrests could follow as the investigation remains ongoing.

“A variety of other matters and individuals remain under investigation in connection with matters both separate from and related to the subject matter of today’s arrests,” the agency said in a statement.

This development has sent shockwaves through Bogalusa, a city that has grappled with challenges tied to crime and economic instability.

Truong’s arrest marks a significant chapter in the city’s efforts to address the complex issues surrounding drug trafficking and its associated crimes.
