A nurse in Kentucky is being credited with saving the life of a baby raccoon that was discovered in distress after falling into a dumpster near her workplace.

Misty Combs, a registered nurse at the Letcher County Health Department, said she and her coworkers spotted a raccoon family struggling in the parking lot outside the building.

The health department is located next to a moonshine distillery, where the animals had reportedly entered a dumpster in search of food.

According to Combs, a mother raccoon was attempting to pull two of her young out of the trash but was unable to reach them.

One baby raccoon managed to climb free without injury, but the other appeared unresponsive.

Combs said she discovered the young animal face down in a mixture of moonshine-soaked peaches and water inside the dumpster.

She added that the raccoon smelled strongly of alcohol, leading her to believe it had consumed the peaches and become intoxicated before slipping into the liquid.

“I believe he was eating the alcohol-soaked peaches all night, causing him to get drunk, fall into the water and drown,” she explained.

Without hesitation, Combs climbed into the dumpster, pulled the raccoon out, and began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Video taken at the scene shows her giving chest compressions as her coworkers looked on.

While some assumed the raccoon would not survive, Combs continued resuscitation efforts until the animal regained signs of life.

She said she was careful to avoid being scratched or bitten, noting the potential risk of rabies transmission.

Animal Control officers were called to the scene and took the raccoon for treatment.

A veterinarian later confirmed that the animal had ingested fermented peaches from the distillery.

After receiving fluids and being warmed with blankets, the young raccoon recovered.

Combs said she later released the animal, which was given the name Otis Campbell, back into the wild after it regained strength.

The incident drew local attention, with many highlighting the unusual circumstances of a raccoon being found unconscious in alcohol-soaked fruit.

Combs credited her medical training and quick response for the successful outcome.

What began as a routine workday at the health department turned into an unexpected rescue operation, ending with the young raccoon’s safe return to its natural environment.

Authorities confirmed that the animal showed no signs of illness following its release.

For Combs, however, the focus was simply on saving the animal in front of her.

The raccoon’s revival and release provided a rare positive ending to a situation that initially appeared fatal.

Local officials said the case also served as a reminder of the importance of safely securing waste to avoid wildlife hazards.
