The cost of eggs in the United States has dropped more than 61% since January, following a historic surge in prices earlier this year.

According to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the national average for a dozen large white shell eggs is now $2.52.

Back on January 21, the same carton of eggs cost around $6.49, according to data compiled by Trading Economics.

In early March, prices peaked at over $8 per dozen, marking an all-time high.

The USDA’s latest Egg Markets Overview attributes the recent decline in prices to a combination of factors, including weaker consumer demand and the stabilization of bird flu outbreaks that had previously disrupted supply.

“Shell egg demand posted a slight improvement headed into the Memorial Day weekend but remained well below average in the continuation of a trend that began during the sharp price increases in late winter,” the USDA report stated.

The dramatic price spike earlier in the year led to noticeable changes in consumer behavior.

In April, a study conducted by Clarify Capital found that more than 30% of Americans had stopped buying eggs entirely due to the high cost.

Market analysts pointed to reduced demand and fewer new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) as contributing to the recent price drop.

Additional efforts to stabilize supply were also made at the federal level.

In April, Reuters reported that the U.S. had increased its egg imports from countries including Turkey, Brazil, and South Korea to help replenish domestic stock during the ongoing outbreak.

The HPAI virus, which first caused concern in 2022, has since led to the death of nearly 170 million birds across the country.

According to Bernt Nelson, an economist with the American Farm Bureau Foundation, the impact of bird flu since the beginning of the outbreak has been significant.

“Bird flu has affected over 166 million birds, including 127 million egg layers,” Nelson said.

He added that this translates to an average annual loss of 42.3 million egg-laying hens—about 11% of the five-year average inventory of 383 million hens.

The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed that the outbreak remains ongoing.

As of the most recent data, 43 separate outbreaks have been confirmed in commercial layer flocks across 10 states.

These include Arizona, California, Iowa, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Washington.

Despite the sharp reduction in retail prices over the past several months, the USDA noted that market conditions remain sensitive to changes in disease patterns and consumer habits.

Inflation is easing across key sectors, thanks to @POTUS‘ leadership.

Gas and energy prices are down 20% year over year; food prices, including eggs, have declined; and consumer earnings increased by 0.8% last month.

The agency continues to monitor supply chains and flock health in coordination with state and local partners.

The egg market remains a closely watched indicator of broader food inflation trends, and the latest decline offers some relief to consumers following extended periods of high grocery costs.

As prices fall and supply continues to stabilize, industry experts say additional shifts in demand and policy decisions could influence the market through the remainder of the year.
