A stabbing attack at a Salem, Oregon homeless shelter left 11 people injured Sunday evening, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. at the Union Gospel Mission Men’s Shelter, located directly across the street from the Salem Police Department, as reported by The Daily Mail.
Police confirmed that among the 11 injured was at least one staff member. The suspect, who is now in custody, had reportedly stayed at the shelter the previous night and was attempting to check in again when the altercation began.

According to Craig Smith, Executive Director of the Union Gospel Mission, the suspect was handing over his belongings when he became violent.
“Something … set him off, and he evidently had a knife in his bag,” Smith said in a statement to NBC News. He added that the entire incident was captured on surveillance video, which has since been turned over to investigators.
The shelter, a 150-bed facility that opened in 2021, was established to replace an older 1960s-era building. It serves as a key resource in the city’s efforts to support a growing homeless population.
Founded in 1952 by local Christian businessmen, the Union Gospel Mission has long played a role in providing shelter and services to the homeless community in Salem.

All 11 victims were transported to a nearby hospital with what police described as “varying types of injuries.” Their current conditions have not been publicly released.
Footage posted to social media showed the suspect lying on the ground as officers took him into custody outside the facility. The man’s identity and the charges he may face have not yet been made public.
Angela Hedrick, a spokesperson for the Salem Police Department, said, “This is a very fresh incident, and detectives are gathering the facts.”
The shelter remained closed following the incident as police continued their investigation. Authorities have not yet indicated whether the attack was premeditated or what may have triggered the suspect’s actions.

The incident marks a significant escalation in concerns about violence in and around facilities serving vulnerable populations.
Salem police and Union Gospel Mission officials say they are reviewing the shelter’s procedures to determine whether any changes are needed to prevent similar attacks in the future.
