A Senate Finance Committee hearing on Thursday turned into a shouting match between Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. over vaccine policy and his dismissal of a senior CDC official, as reported by MSN.
During questioning, Warren pressed Kennedy on statements he made last year while being considered for his current role. She cited his comments promising not to restrict vaccine access for anyone who wanted them.
“So last November, while you are under consideration to become Secretary of Health and Human Services, Mr. Kennedy, you said, quote, if vaccines are working for somebody, I’m not going to take them away. No exceptions, no ifs, or buts,” Warren said.
She then challenged him over a recent announcement that COVID-19 vaccines would no longer be approved for healthy individuals under age 65. “Then last week you announced that the COVID-19 vaccine is no longer approved for healthy people under the age of 65,” Warren said.
Kennedy responded, “It’s not recommended for healthy people.”
Warren shot back, “If you don’t recommend, then the consequence of that in many states is that you can’t walk into a pharmacy and get one! You are effectively denying people vaccines!”
Kennedy raised his voice in reply:
“We’re not going to recommend a product for which there’s no clinical data for that indication! Is that what I should be doing?”

Warren countered, “What you should be doing is honoring your promise that you made when you were looking to get confirmed in this job. Did you hold up a big sign saying that you were lying when you said that?”
“I know you’ve taken $855K from PHARMA COMPANIES, SENATOR! I’m not gonna recommend a product for which there is no clinical data for that indication! [COVID vax for healthy people]”
Kennedy insisted, “I’m not taking them away! Everybody can get access to them!”
The exchange then shifted to the recent departure of CDC official Susan Monarez. Warren asked if Kennedy had told Monarez she must resign after refusing to approve changes to the childhood vaccine schedule.

Kennedy replied, “No, I told her that she had to resign because I asked her, are you a trustworthy person? And she said no.”
Warren reminded Kennedy that Monarez disputed his account and that he had previously described her as “unimpeachable.” She concluded by accusing him of firing her for not complying with his changes.
“It looks like she didn’t bend the knee, so you fired her,” Warren said, before adding, “You’re putting America’s babies’ health at risk, America’s seniors’ health at risk, all Americans’ health at risk, and you should resign.”
