Elon Musk made waves at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Thursday, throwing his support behind taxpayer refunds while slamming Democrats for their blatant disregard for hardworking Americans, as reported by The Independent Journal Review.
As the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk outlined plans to cut government waste and return billions to taxpayers—an idea that’s already facing fierce opposition from the left.
During a surprise appearance on stage, Musk sat down with Newsmax’s Robb Schmitt to discuss his role in the Trump administration and the backlash from Democrats in recent weeks.

The controversy kicked off after DOGE adviser and investment CEO James Fishback proposed a “DOGE dividend” on X, suggesting that taxpayers receive direct refunds from the department’s savings.
Musk, never one to shy away from bold ideas, responded by saying he’d consult President Trump—and it didn’t take long for the idea to gain traction.
“It’s money that’s taken away from things that are destructive to the country and from organizations that hate you. I mean, that’s glorious. That’s like the spoils of battle, you know?”
Musk confirmed that after speaking with Trump, the president fully supported the plan. “So it sounds like that’s something we’re going to do. So as we’re finding savings, that’s going to translate directly to reductions in tax,” Musk stated.

According to a detailed proposal from Fishback, the initiative would take 20% of DOGE’s projected $2 trillion in savings—roughly $400 billion—and distribute it among 79 million taxpaying households in 2025.
That could mean checks of up to $5,000 per household, with additional savings being used to pay down the ballooning national debt.
Predictably, Democrats weren’t thrilled at the idea of Americans getting their own money back.
Since the February 3rd announcement that the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) would be moved under Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s leadership, left-wing politicians have been in an uproar.
Democratic Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett scoffed at the proposed refunds during an interview on ABC News, dismissing the idea outright. “Congress is not in the business of giving out money,” she sneered.

Musk, however, was quick to call out the left’s hypocrisy.
“People ask me, ‘What’s the most surprising thing you’ve encountered in D.C.?’ and I say, ‘The most surprising thing is the scale of the expenditures. When you add caring and competence where it was absent before, you can actually save billions of dollars sometimes in an hour. It’s wild.”
He didn’t stop there.
“They [Democrats] really lack empathy for the average taxpayer who’s working hard, paying taxes. Then they say, ‘Oh, a million dollars doesn’t matter.’ I think it matters a lot to people, you know? So what are you talking about?”
Further fueling Democratic outrage, recent reports exposed how billions in taxpayer dollars were funneled through USAID to fund left-wing social engineering programs overseas.
Some of these funds even risked ending up in the hands of the Taliban or groups connected to the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
The revelations sent Democrats into a meltdown, with New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver taking to the streets of Washington, D.C., screaming that they were at “war” and demanding the Senate be “shut down.”
Despite multiple lawsuits attempting to block DOGE’s review of federal agencies, the Trump administration scored a major legal win last weekend.
Washington, D.C., District Court Judge John D. Bates ruled against an attempt to stop Musk from accessing records from the Health and Human Services Department, the Labor Department, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
With the left scrambling to keep its bloated bureaucracy intact, Musk and Trump appear to be moving full steam ahead on their taxpayer refund initiative. And if Democrats continue standing in the way, they might find out the hard way that Americans are tired of footing the bill for wasteful spending.
