Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk announced on Saturday the launch of a new political party, the “America Party,” following public disagreements with President Donald Trump over the federal spending package known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which was signed into law on Friday.

The announcement followed a poll Musk posted on X on July 4, asking whether there was public support for creating a political party outside of the Republican and Democratic parties.

In the poll, Musk asked, “Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?” Of the 1.2 million users who voted, 65.4 percent said “yes,” while 34.6 percent voted “no.”

Responding to the poll’s outcome, Musk posted, “By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

According to Musk, the new party will strategically target a small number of races with the goal of leveraging influence over key legislation.

He stated that the America Party would “laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts.”

In a follow-up post, Musk added, “Given the razor-thin legislative margins, that would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring that they serve the true will of the people.”

The formation of the America Party follows escalating tension between Musk and President Trump, whom Musk had endorsed during the 2024 presidential election against then–Vice President Kamala Harris.

The conflict appears to have intensified following Trump’s approval of the One Big Beautiful Bill, a comprehensive legislative package passed by the GOP-led House and signed into law Friday. Musk has publicly criticized the bill, particularly its scope and level of federal spending.

Though the specifics of Musk’s objections to the legislation were not detailed in Saturday’s announcement, he has repeatedly used his X platform to express concerns over what he characterizes as government waste and bipartisan failure to exercise fiscal restraint.

His latest move marks a significant step toward translating his public criticism into a political initiative.

The America Party announcement adds to Musk’s recent political involvement through X, the platform he owns, where he has used polls and posts to engage directly with millions of users on national issues.

While it is not yet clear how the new party will be structured or financed, Musk’s influence and following suggest that the party’s emergence could have measurable effects on future congressional elections.

The political realignment comes at a time when control of Congress is expected to be closely contested in the 2026 midterms.

With Musk’s stated goal of targeting a limited number of races where margins are thin, the success or failure of the America Party could hinge on its ability to siphon off support from traditional Republican or Democrat strongholds.

Whether the party gains traction remains to be seen, but Musk has made clear that he intends to challenge what he described as a “uniparty” system by intervening directly in the legislative balance of power.
