Enter B-52 Sandman

Just a quick post to update on whether the 8pm Eastern deadline issued by President Donald Trump for Iran to cave is real or not. Spoiler alert: It’s real. 

After a Truth Social and X cross-post by the President that promised a civilization-ending demise coming to the Iranian military junta running the country, a couple of things happened. The anti-Trump fever swamp leapt to war crime accusations, fears of nuclear weapons being used, and calls for emergency impeachment and/or 25th Amendment measures against Trump being deployed to fill the timelines of the online world and cable news outlets leading up to the deadline.  

Simultaneously, most of the civilian leadership prosecuting the war have gone radio silent. The President, who was ubiquitous yesterday, spoke only to a crowd of Hungarians by way of Vice-President J.D. Vance’s cellphone. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has been quiet today. A previously scheduled Pentagon briefing by War Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan “Raizin'” Caine was cancelled. Michael Waltz, our ambassador to the United Nations, did confront very hotly the Iranian ambassador at a Security Council meeting, but other than that, and one comment on Iran offered by the Vice-President during his speech in Hungary, all signs point to 8pm Eastern becoming the time equivalent of Iran’s Doomsday clock finally hitting Midnight. 

Fox News’ Trey Yingst reported about an hour ago that Centcom Commander Brad Cooper said hundreds of one-way drones have been deployed. We are giving Iran not just a taste of their own medicine, using reverse-engineered Iranian technology from their weapons of destruction, but we’re giving them a fatal overdose, perhaps.

And then, there’s this.

How many took off? We have no idea. Are there B-2’s, B-1’s, or anything else on the way? No clue, but almost certainly in a blow of the magnitude the President promised earlier, virtually everything that flies will see action. But let’s focus on what we think we know – the B-52’s that took off a little over half an hour ago. 

The base of operations is in Gloucester, home of the United Kingdom’s RAF at Fairford. Let’s say those Stratofortress bombers were fully loaded. Don’t worry, this isn’t a Monty Python discussion about the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow. The flight time to get to Tehran is between 5-7 hours, depending on how hard they stay on the gas, and how heavy they are. But let’s just assume within that window, the flight time is around five-and-a-half hours. If it left at 2:30pm Eastern time, that would mean they would be ready to open the doors and drop ordnance at…8:00pm.

Amit Segal, one of the most-respected newsmen in Israel, just posted this about whether a last-minute deal could be achieved. 

Israeli source: The next 24 hours are the most decisive in the war. If it were up to the political leadership in Iran, there would have been a ceasefire long ago. There is doubt about their control.
