Democrats are reacting with outrage as the Trump administration moves forward with efforts to clean up waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal government.

A simple request from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for federal employees to submit a brief summary of their weekly tasks has sparked backlash from several Democratic lawmakers.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk drew attention to the OPM’s request, which asked federal employees to submit a five-bullet-point summary of their work over the past week.

The request, a standard accountability measure in most workplaces, was met with outrage from some Democrats who viewed it as an attack on the federal workforce.

Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN) expressed her frustration by personally attacking Musk, calling him a “d**k.”

Meanwhile, Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL) went a step further by encouraging federal employees to engage in “massive civil disobedience.”

He suggested that employees should respond with letters containing “GFY,” an abbreviation for an expletive-laden response.

Such advice raises serious concerns about insubordination within the federal workforce.

Encouraging government employees to defy basic workplace accountability measures could create serious repercussions for those who follow through on Casten’s suggestion.

Despite this, Casten appeared unconcerned about the potential consequences for federal employees who might take his advice.

Not to be left out of the controversy, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) attempted to mock the OPM’s request by posting his own response.

Swalwell, who serves in the legislative branch and has no role in the executive branch’s operations, misrepresented the request and framed it as an attack on democracy.

Swalwell claimed that responding to the email would be akin to “fighting fascism,” though the request simply asked employees to summarize their work—a standard practice in most professional settings.

His reaction underscored a fundamental misunderstanding of how government oversight works.

His response also inadvertently highlighted a larger issue: transparency and accountability in government.

Federal employees work for the American people, and providing a basic rundown of their weekly tasks should be a reasonable expectation.

If elected officials like Swalwell were held to the same standard, their own reports might reveal little more than political grandstanding and obstruction.

“GFY,” Eric? How undignified. How stunningly classless. How crass. I’m embarrassed for you. Signed, a Californian. https://t.co/V2lOOzLPZy

That is the clearest evidence you could possibly produce that you should be fired.

The reaction from Democrats raises questions about their resistance to transparency within the federal bureaucracy.

While the Trump administration aims to bring accountability to federal agencies, Democratic lawmakers appear intent on defending a status quo that allows inefficiency and lack of oversight to persist.

The expectation that federal employees fulfill their duties is not “fascism,” as Swalwell suggested. Ensuring that taxpayer-funded employees are actually performing their jobs is a basic principle of good governance.

Despite the backlash, the Trump administration remains focused on implementing reforms that will hold government workers accountable.

The response from Democratic lawmakers, however, suggests that any effort to introduce oversight into the federal bureaucracy will continue to face fierce resistance.
