During a recent segment on NewsNation, sports commentator Stephen A. Smith shared his thoughts on Joe Biden’s farewell speech, offering a mix of reflection and critique.
While Smith acknowledged Biden’s decades of public service and personal tragedies, he questioned the necessity and relevance of the address, arguing that the nation has largely moved past the Biden’s influence.
Smith began by expressing a sense of sadness over the moment. “I was sad, guys, I was sad,” he said.
“Of course, the President is entitled, and he should give a farewell speech. There is no question about that. But different times invade us all. And when you see the times that we live in, sometimes you see something, and you just say, silence or a simple goodbye would suffice. And that’s how I felt about the President tonight.”

He highlighted Biden’s reputation as a decent and family-oriented man who has endured significant personal loss.
“I have heard throughout my entire life what a good and what a decent man he is, what a family-oriented individual that he is, some of the tragedies, the unspeakable tragedies that he has suffered,” Smith said. “And our hearts go out to him.”
Despite acknowledging Biden’s service, Smith criticized his decision to remain in the political arena rather than stepping down as a transitional figure.
“You were supposed to step away, you were supposed to be a transitional president, and you didn’t do that,” Smith said.
“And you decided that you wanted to stay in the race, and then you got exposed because you showed up on a debate stage June 27, and you are not what people on the left have purported you to be.”
Smith also pointed to the controversies that defined Biden’s term, including open border policies and the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
“You force yourself to embrace and inhale conversations about what you did with open borders, from your first day in office, what you did with the war in Afghanistan, etc.,” he said, highlighting what many conservatives view as missteps.
Smith reflected on the lack of enthusiasm surrounding the Biden’s farewell, suggesting that his attempts to maintain influence fell flat.
“You’re walking out of office when clearly the mandate was more so against you than necessarily for Donald Trump,” he said.
“And then you’re talking to the American people tonight, and you’re telling them, we’re a nation of laws.”
Smith noted that Biden’s message failed to resonate with a significant portion of the population.
“There’s a lot of people out there that didn’t want to hear what he had to say months ago when he was president,” Smith said.
“And unfortunately, maybe not me, maybe not you two, but unfortunately, there’s not a lot of Americans that were interested in hearing what he had to say tonight, and that’s sad.”

Smith’s remarks encapsulated a broader sentiment of dissatisfaction with Biden’s legacy and the perception that his farewell address lacked the impact he may have hoped to achieve.
While recognizing his service and hardships, Smith concluded that the nation had moved beyond his influence, leaving his farewell speech as a largely muted moment in political history.
