ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith sharply criticized former President Joe Biden following his first public speech since leaving office, describing the event as a “waste of time” and suggesting even Democrats questioned its purpose.

As The Daily Caller reported, Biden delivered the address on Tuesday at the National Conference of Advocates, Counselors and Representatives for the Disabled in Chicago.

His remarks focused on preserving Social Security and included pointed critiques of President Donald Trump’s policies. Biden also repeated themes from his earlier campaigns, calling for national unity.

During an appearance on CUOMO on NewsNation, host Chris Cuomo asked Smith for his take on the speech. Smith dismissed the event outright, admitting he tuned out early.

“Waste of time. Fell on deaf ears. I watched about five minutes of it. I didn’t really have much interest in it. Because he’s no longer the president.”

Smith continued, slamming Biden’s record while in office. “When he was the president, there were some things that he did, like opening the borders, which were horrendous and obviously debilitating to this nation. And because of it, that accentuated the point that he needed to go, the man that once promised to be a transitional president, decided that he wanted to stay and ultimately had to be forced out.”

He further questioned the speech’s relevance, arguing that Biden’s words lacked new substance.

“When all you’re doing this regurgitating things that you said in the past, not just when you were president, but when you were a candidate for the presidency before you ultimately won the election in 2020,” Smith said. “It’s not to say that he’s completely right or wrong. It’s to simply say, unfortunately, because of the things that have transpired over the last several years, a lot of people weren’t too interested in hearing from him.”

According to Smith, even within Biden’s own party, there seemed to be a lack of enthusiasm over his return to the podium.

“There were a plethora of them asking the question: ‘Why, for what? What possible purpose did it serve?’ And certainly they’re asking themselves now after seeing him speak,” Smith said.

Ahead of the speech, CNN anchor Jessica Dean posed a question to Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), asking whether Biden’s appearance would help the Democratic Party. Khanna gave a noncommittal response.

“Well, he’s a former president. He certainly can speak,” Khanna said. “And hopefully he’ll speak out for due process of the law.”

Biden’s remarks came as President Trump has reaffirmed his pledge not to cut Social Security benefits. In January 2023, Trump urged Republicans not to “cut a single penny” from the program, maintaining a firm stance in support of retirees.
