ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith said Thursday that President Donald Trump is gaining support among voters traditionally aligned with the Democratic Party, pointing to a political environment where progressive lawmakers prioritize attacking Trump over addressing policy issues.

Smith made the remarks during an appearance on Hannity on Fox News, where he addressed what he sees as shifting political momentum in favor of Trump, particularly among Black and young Democratic voters.

“Trump is gaining traction within the Democratic Party. Black voters, young voters,” Smith said.

“He did it during the election, but the trajectory seems to be going in a forward direction.”

Smith’s comments follow a series of polling indicators and voter outreach developments that suggest President Trump is increasing his appeal in areas once considered Democratic strongholds.

Smith pointed to what he described as missteps by Democratic lawmakers and local leaders, including Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and progressive members of Congress.

“They haven’t realized yet that if it’s AOC or it’s Jasmine Crockett … there’s a reason Sean Hannity shows them every chance he gets,” Smith said, referring to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rep.

Jasmine Crockett (D-TX). “He wants them to be illuminated. He wants them to be front and center for the Democratic Party because it will ensure that the Republicans are gonna win in 2026 and 2028.”

Smith did not criticize Fox News host Sean Hannity for highlighting progressive Democrats.

Instead, he noted that the coverage reflects strategic realities in the current political media landscape.

According to Smith, lawmakers like Ocasio-Cortez and Crockett are inadvertently helping Republicans by dominating the public image of the Democratic Party with rhetoric that alienates key voter blocs.

“Their focus seems to be on doing anything, being the antithesis of Trump, instead of helping to govern the country,” Smith said.

While he did not specify what book he was referencing, Smith concluded his comments by suggesting that future revelations about political motivations and tactics could further harm the Democratic Party’s public image.

“When the book comes out, and that stuff is revealed, it makes it even worse,” he said.

Smith’s remarks come as President Trump continues to focus on economic growth, law enforcement, and border security — themes that have resonated with a growing number of minority and working-class voters.

Polling in recent months has shown President Trump making notable inroads among voters who previously leaned Democratic, especially in battleground states.

Political strategists across the spectrum have acknowledged that dissatisfaction with progressive messaging and local policy failures has opened the door for Trump to attract broader support.

The 2024 election cycle has already seen Trump expand his outreach to voters in traditionally blue urban areas.

Republican operatives say Smith’s assessment reflects what they have been hearing in communities across the country.
