House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer said there are unresolved questions surrounding Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar’s personal finances, suggesting the matter warrants review by the House Ethics Committee due to what he described as a sharp and unexplained increase in her net worth.
Comer made the remarks during an exchange with journalist Catherine Herridge, where he was asked to elaborate on comments he made earlier in the week regarding Omar’s financial disclosures. Herridge opened the discussion by referencing Comer’s previous statement.
“You said this week that Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar was quote at the top of the suspect list. Can you elaborate?” Herridge asked.
Comer responded by pointing to the mandatory financial disclosures required of members of Congress and contrasted his own financial situation with Omar’s.
He emphasized that congressional salaries have remained unchanged during his time in office.
“Well, there we have to disclose annually our financial statements. And, you know, I think it’s public knowledge what the what the salary is for Congress, and it’s been the same. I’ve been here nine years. It’s been the exact same 174,000 for nine years,” Comer said.
“Omar has been here maybe five or seven years. But regardless, her net worth, just out of nowhere, skyrocketed.”

Comer said the reported increase in Omar’s wealth appears to be connected to investment activity involving her husband.
According to Comer, the situation raises questions that have not been publicly answered.
“We know it’s tied to a venture capital or private equity fund, some type of investment, two investment funds that her husband’s running,” Comer said.
“We have a lot of questions about where the money came from. How do you make that much in fees in a short period of time?”
Herridge then asked whether the situation could be referred for formal review by congressional ethics authorities.
“Is the congresswoman Ilhan Omar. Is this a case that could be referred to the Ethics Committee?” she asked.
Comer replied that the Ethics Committee exists specifically to examine such matters involving members of Congress.
“Absolutely. The ethics committee’s sole purpose in life is to investigate members,” Comer said.
Herridge followed up by asking whether Comer intended to formally refer Omar’s case to the committee.
“Will you refer her case to the Ethics Committee?” she asked.
“Absolutely,” Comer responded.
He added that he expects broader interest among lawmakers in seeing the issue addressed.
“And I think that they’re going to be a lot of members that will encourage the Ethics Committee to take this up. Because it’s just a simple question. It shouldn’t take very long, one little session with the Ethics Committee, you know, with basic questions, how did he amassed this much money? And then, if they’re not satisfied with the answer, then they can certainly get those financial records.”
