CNN’s chief data analyst Harry Enten said during a live segment Saturday that net migration into the United States is projected to be negative in 2025 — a development he noted hasn’t occurred in at least half a century.

Enten made the remarks during “CNN Newsroom” while evaluating how President Donald Trump has followed through on major campaign promises, including immigration enforcement and trade policy.

He said the administration’s actions are contributing to the most significant transformation in U.S. immigration trends in decades.

“It is not the only way that Trump is remaking America,” Enten said.

“The other big thing that Trump ran on, right, was immigration. How about net migration in the United States? Get this. It’s down. It’s going to be down at least 60%. We may be dealing with, get this, negative net migration to the United States in 2025. That would be the first time there is negative net migration in this country in at least 50 years.”

Enten added that net migration is dropping from approximately 2.8 million in 2024.

“So Donald Trump has always run on tariffs and he’s running a hawkish line on immigration,” he continued.

“And on both of those issues, we are seeing record high tariff rates for this century going all the way back, well back into the early part of the 20th century. When it comes to immigration, net migration, we are seeing record low levels, way down from where we were during the Biden administration.”

The shift comes after a border crisis that escalated under the Biden-Harris administration.

Millions of illegal aliens crossed into the country during that period, overwhelming sanctuary cities like New York City and Denver.

City officials frequently cited housing shortages, strained emergency services, and limited school resources as direct results of the surge.

In addition to overwhelmed local governments, the Biden-Harris administration faced criticism over drug trafficking across the southern border, several high-profile killings of American citizens, and reports of hundreds of thousands of unaccounted-for migrant children.

Since taking office in January, President Trump has signed numerous executive orders focused on restoring immigration enforcement and combating drug cartels.

Among the administration’s actions were directives that enabled mass arrests and deportations of illegal aliens.

Data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) shows that illegal crossings dropped significantly, with just 25,228 nationwide encounters recorded in June.

Enten also addressed criticism of Trump’s trade policies during the segment.

When asked whether Trump “always chickens out” on tariffs, Enten disagreed.

“No, I don’t think that’s true, Omar. I think the theme of this segment is going to be love it, like it, lump it, Trump’s remaking the United States of America. We can start there with tariffs,” Enten said.

“What are we talking about? No tacos for Trump. The effective tariff rate, get this, 18%. It is the highest, the highest since the 1930s up from, get this, just 2% last year,” he added.

“As I’m going to talk about in this segment, I can’t think of a more influential president during this century.”

Enten further noted that the Trump administration has been aggressive with executive action.

He stated that Trump had already signed 180 executive orders in 2025 alone, a pace that he compared to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration.

By contrast, he said President Joe Biden signed 77 executive orders during his first year in office.

“Donald Trump is remaking the United States,” Enten said.

“Love it, like it or lump it. He has been tremendously influential to a historic degree, Omar.”
