Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), once a staunch supporter of Ukraine, issued a sharp rebuke of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, signaling a potential shift in U.S.-Ukraine relations under President Donald Trump’s administration.
Graham, who had previously advocated for continued American aid to Kyiv, expressed doubt about future cooperation with Zelensky following a tense meeting at the White House.
Speaking to reporters, Graham described the Oval Office exchange between Zelensky and Trump as a “complete, utter disaster,” commending Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance for their handling of the situation.

“I don’t know if we can ever do business with Zelensky again,” Graham stated. “I think most Americans saw a guy that they would not want to go in business with.”
Graham’s remarks represent a notable reversal for the senator, who had traveled to Ukraine multiple times since Russia’s 2022 invasion and had been one of Kyiv’s strongest allies in the Republican Party.
He indicated that the meeting was a turning point, particularly after what he viewed as Zelensky’s combative behavior.
“What I saw in the Oval Office was disrespectful,” Graham said. “[Zelensky] was terrible at Munich, and now he’s made it almost impossible to sell to the American people that he’s a good investment.”

The confrontation in the White House reportedly escalated to the point where Trump asked Zelensky to leave. Sources familiar with the discussion characterized the Ukrainian leader’s tone as “aggressive” as he pushed for continued U.S. military support.
Graham, once an advocate for funding Ukraine’s war effort, now questions whether Zelensky is the right leader to manage U.S.-Ukraine relations.
“He either needs to resign and send somebody over that we can do business with, or he needs to change,” Graham said.

His comments underscore a growing sentiment within the Republican Party that Ukraine should no longer expect unconditional U.S. assistance.

Graham, who had previously framed support for Ukraine as a deterrent against Russian aggression, now aligns more closely with Trump’s “America First” foreign policy.
“The question for me, for the Ukrainian people—I don’t know if Zelensky can ever get you where you want to go with the United States,” Graham told Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman. “Either he dramatically changes, or you gotta get someone new.”
Zelensky’s visit to Washington was cut short following the Oval Office confrontation, with the Ukrainian president canceling a scheduled press conference before departing.
The fallout raises new questions about the future of U.S. aid to Ukraine, particularly under an administration that has repeatedly signaled an end to what Trump and Vance have called “reckless” foreign entanglements.
Instead of continued military funding, Trump officials have pushed for a $500 billion minerals deal with Ukraine, which they argue would establish a new economic partnership rather than perpetuate reliance on American financial support.
However, given the recent diplomatic friction, the status of that deal remains uncertain.
As the Trump administration takes a hardline stance on foreign assistance, Graham’s reversal on Zelensky reflects a broader shift among Republicans.
With Trump and Vance steering U.S. policy away from open-ended commitments, Ukraine’s ability to secure further American aid appears increasingly uncertain.
