Newly appointed border czar Tom Homan strongly pushed back against Pope Francis’ recent remarks criticizing the Trump administration’s deportation of illegal immigrants, calling the comments hypocritical.
During an appearance on Newsmax, Homan highlighted the irony of the Vatican’s stringent border protections while addressing the necessity of enforcing U.S. immigration laws.
Pope Francis recently described the Trump administration’s deportation efforts as “a disgrace,” sparking widespread debate.

His remarks came as the administration launched its aggressive immigration enforcement campaign, fulfilling President Donald Trump’s promise to crack down on illegal immigration and deport those with criminal records.
Homan, a lifelong Catholic, directly responded to the pope’s statement during his interview with Newsmax host Rob Schmitt.
Schmitt noted the media’s tendency to focus on emotional stories surrounding deportations, asking Homan, “What’s your message to the American people as you guys do this work?”
Homan defended the administration’s immigration policies, emphasizing that securing the border saves lives and prevents suffering caused by cartels and illegal crossings.
“When we secure the border, less people come, less women get raped by the cartel, less children die in the river, and less Americans die from fentanyl overdoses,” Homan said.
“He [Pope Francis] ought to stick to the Catholic Church and fix that. That’s a mess.”
Homan also criticized the Vatican’s strict security measures, which include massive walls and rigorous enforcement to prevent unauthorized entry.
“If you enter the Vatican [illegally], the crime is serious. You’ll be charged with a serious crime in jail. So, he can protect the Vatican where he lives, he can build a wall where he lives, but the American people are not allowed that? No, secure the border, save lives.”
Schmitt added to the discussion, commenting on the Vatican’s imposing fortifications.
“The wall that’s around the Vatican is even nicer than Trump’s wall… the wall around the Vatican is really, really impressive,” Schmitt said.

Homan also addressed financial incentives that some U.S. Catholic bishops and organizations receive in relation to immigration efforts.
He pointed out that Catholic non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and dioceses have received billions of dollars in government funding to process and house illegal immigrants, fueling criticism of their role in the border crisis.
This financial relationship, Homan suggested, undermines the credibility of those criticizing the Trump administration’s efforts to enforce immigration laws.
“Too many American bishops and organizations have taken their 30 pieces of silver from the Democrat party in exchange for fueling the border crisis,” he said.
Homan’s remarks also reflected broader criticism of Pope Francis’ leadership within the Church.
He pointed to ongoing financial and sexual scandals that have plagued the Church, as well as the pope’s controversial deal with Communist China, which many see as detrimental to Chinese Catholics.
Instead of criticizing national leaders for enforcing their countries’ immigration laws, Homan argued, Pope Francis should focus on addressing these internal issues.
“The man who keeps renewing the catastrophic deal with Communist China to the detriment of Chinese Catholics is in absolutely no position to lecture Donald Trump,” Homan stated.
As the Trump administration intensifies its border enforcement measures, Homan remains a key figure in implementing the administration’s immigration policies.
His direct response to Pope Francis highlights the ongoing tension between those advocating for stricter border security and critics who argue for more lenient immigration policies.
The debate underscores the complex intersection of religion, politics, and public policy in addressing immigration challenges.
