Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz is facing renewed scrutiny after remarks she made during a recent tour of the state’s new migrant detention facility, known informally as “Alligator Alcatraz.”

The Democratic congresswoman expressed concern about the facility’s layout and hygiene standards—particularly the presence of caged detention areas and combined toilet-sink units—drawing criticism from lawmakers and officials familiar with standard correctional infrastructure.

Wasserman Schultz toured the facility on Saturday alongside a bipartisan group of approximately 25 elected officials, including five members of Congress and about 20 state legislators.

The group became the first group of lawmakers to inspect the detention site, located in Florida and operated under the oversight of the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

After the tour, Wasserman Schultz spoke to reporters and described the facility as an “internment camp,” expressing dismay that detainees were housed in what she referred to as cages.

She also voiced concern about the facility’s hygiene setup, saying, “They brush their teeth where they poop, in the same unit.”

The congresswoman’s comments prompted immediate pushback from state officials and conservative lawmakers.

Florida Division of Emergency Management Executive Director Kevin Guthrie addressed the remarks during an interview on Jesse Watters Primetime, explaining that the sink-and-toilet combination setup is standard in secure detention facilities.

“This is a standard mock-up toilet system that is in any secured facility,” Guthrie said.

“Again, we meet and exceed either the national standard or the state of Florida standard—whatever is a higher level, we meet and or exceed that standard.”

Guthrie added, “Yes, there is a sink there. There is a toilet there, but… whether you use a restroom or you brush your teeth, in a restroom, you know, also just eating food.”

Critics of Wasserman Schultz pointed out that similar facilities have long existed in both federal and state correctional systems and that the design is common in secure environments.

Others noted that comparable detention conditions were in place during the Biden-Harris administration, particularly during the height of the southern border surge in 2023.

At the time, images circulated showing overcrowded migrant facilities in Ajo, Arizona, where illegal border crossers were held in sweltering conditions under federal custody.

Despite the Biden administration’s handling of those situations, many Democrat lawmakers—including Wasserman Schultz—did not issue public criticism of the facilities or conditions.

The contrast has drawn attention from observers who argue that some elected officials are applying a double standard based on political affiliation.

Distance A: Perfectly normal sink-to-commode distance.

Distance B: Slightly closer distance, typical of prison toilets but clearly a genocidal war crime worse than 9/11.

The Florida facility at the center of the current debate was developed in alignment with President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement priorities and is intended to detain individuals who have violated U.S. immigration laws.

Florida officials have defended the facility’s design and standards, asserting that it provides clean, safe, and constitutionally compliant housing for detainees.

Republican lawmakers who participated in the tour also rejected the claims made by their Democratic colleagues.

Florida State Senator Blaise Ingoglia told Politico that the complaints amounted to “political theater.”

“The rhetoric does not match the reality,” Ingoglia said.

“It’s basically all political theater coming from the [Democrats]. What they’re saying is pure bullshit.”

While Democrats continue to call for changes to Florida’s immigration enforcement policies, state officials have maintained that the facility will remain operational.

Florida has expanded its role in immigration enforcement over the past year, deploying resources to support federal efforts and establishing state-level procedures to detain and process individuals entering the country unlawfully.

As public debate over the facility continues, Guthrie and other state leaders have reiterated that the conditions meet all legal standards and will remain in place as Florida continues its enforcement operations.
