Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) drew criticism on Friday after announcing that he would be trading in his Tesla as a protest against Tesla CEO Elon Musk and President Donald Trump.
The Arizona senator shared a video on X, stating that he no longer wanted to drive the electric vehicle (EV) due to Musk’s political views.
“When I bought this thing, I didn’t think it was going to become a political issue,” Kelly said in the video, pointing at his Tesla.
Elon Musk Called This Financial News ‘Terrifying’
He claimed that each time he had driven the car over the past two months, it had reminded him of “just how much damage Elon Musk and Donald Trump is doing to our country.”
Kelly then declared that it was time for a change.
“Elon Musk kind of turned out to be an asshole. And I don’t want to be driving a car built and designed by an asshole,” the senator said.
I bought a Tesla because it was fast like a rocket ship. But now every time I drive it, I feel like a rolling billboard for a man dismantling our government and hurting people. So Tesla, you’re fired!

One person questioned Kelly’s priorities, writing, “Can I have it? My truck broke down and I could really use a vehicle. Just sayin. Some Americans don’t have the choice to just give up their vehicle cause they don’t like the owner of the car company.”

Kelly’s announcement follows a growing trend among left-wing figures who have publicly declared they are trading in or selling their Tesla vehicles as a protest against Musk’s increasing alignment with conservative viewpoints.
Earlier this month, Breitbart News reported that some leftists have begun referring to Tesla vehicles as “Swastikars” in an attempt to vilify the brand.
The report, citing The Guardian, noted that celebrities have led the charge in framing Tesla ownership as a political statement.
Musk, who has served as Tesla’s CEO since October 2008, has become a frequent target of left-wing criticism, particularly after voicing support for government efficiency initiatives under Trump’s administration.
During a recent interview, Kelly took aim at Musk’s leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), accusing the initiative of harming Americans.
However, polling from Harvard CAPS/Harris in February indicated that DOGE’s efforts to reduce government waste remain widely popular among the public.
As Kelly moves forward with his decision to part ways with Tesla, reactions suggest that his protest may not have had the intended effect, with many seeing it as another example of political grandstanding.
