Former NBC anchor Billy Bush has alleged that major media networks orchestrated a coordinated effort to undermine Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign.
In an interview with Tucker Carlson, Bush described how mainstream media outlets abandoned impartial journalism in favor of activism aimed at derailing Trump’s rise to power.
Bush claimed that major networks, including ABC News, created dedicated investigative units to unearth damaging stories about Trump.

Speaking to Carlson, he highlighted the scale of the effort, which he described as unprecedented.
“[I] remember this over at ABC News, they did at the same time when Trump became president. They launched a 70… they built a 75 person investigative unit,” Bush said.
“I know the guy who was head of it dedicated to anything negative on Trump, find stuff on him, and get him out. This is not journalism, this is not news, it is activism.”
The discussion also revisited Bush’s own experience with media scrutiny during the 2016 campaign, specifically the infamous leaked tape from 2005 that captured a private conversation between Bush and Trump.
The recording, obtained by The Washington Post, surfaced weeks before the election and sparked widespread backlash.
The tape featured Trump making explicit and crude comments about women, including his now-famous remark about being able to “grab [women] by the p****” because of his celebrity status.
The fallout was swift. Billy Bush, who was then a co-host on NBC’s Today show, was suspended and later fired. Trump, meanwhile, apologized for the remarks, calling them “locker room talk” and denying any inappropriate actions.
Despite the media firestorm, Trump’s supporters rallied behind him, arguing that the controversy was overblown and emphasizing his policy positions over past comments.
Trump went on to win the presidency.
Bush also reflected on what he called the media’s “Trump Derangement Syndrome,” where opposing Trump seemed to take precedence over fair and ethical reporting.
He specifically criticized Jeff Zucker, then-president of CNN, as being emblematic of the broader media narrative against Trump.
“11 years later and a lawsuit over Miss Universe and whatever else… NBC feels completely differently about Donald Trump and now it’s: get him at all costs. Get him out of this presidential race at all costs,” Bush said.
Bush further alleged that media executives across competing networks shared a common agenda and were reluctant to hold each other accountable for unethical practices.
“All the major networks shared that mission,” Bush said. “Get him at all costs. Get him out of this presidential race at all costs.”

The conversation with Carlson also delved into Bush’s career trajectory.
A member of the prominent Bush family, Billy Bush began his media career in radio before transitioning to television.
He joined Access Hollywood in 2001, covering celebrity news and red-carpet events.
In 2016, he briefly co-hosted the third hour of NBC’s Today show before his career took a major hit following the release of the hot mic recording.
The 2005 recording remains a focal point in discussions about media ethics, political scandals, and the role of the press in shaping public opinion.
Bush’s comments to Carlson have reignited debates over the media’s handling of Trump’s candidacy and the lengths to which networks went during one of the most contentious elections in modern history.
