Former Vice President Mike Pence thanked House Speaker Mike Johnson in a letter Monday for including provisions to defund Planned Parenthood in the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB).
A longtime anti-abortion hardliner, Pence has opposed abortion pills and procedures for non-viable pregnancies, and has urged Republicans to support a nationwide 15-week abortion ban. The former vice president hailed the bill’s anti-abortion provisions as a “generational victory for life” in a letter exclusively obtained by the Daily Caller. “With this legislation, you carry forward the hopes, prayers, and toils of the Pro-Life Movement,” Pence told Johnson in the letter.
The facts are undeniable. Abortion pills end an innocent human life and pose serious safety concerns for pregnant women. The American people deserve the truth. It’s time for transparency not bureaucratic foot-dragging by @US_FDA. The time to Stand for Life is Now🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/FTvS22QuRo

Congress cut off Planned Parenthood’s Medicaid funding for a year when it passed the OBBB on July 4.
The law blocks Medicaid payments to any nonprofit that provides abortions outside of narrow exceptions, a direct hit to Planned Parenthood, which runs nearly 600 clinics nationwide.
“Apart from that great cloud of witnesses and the long labor of half of a century,” Pence wrote, referring to past pro-life advocates. “We would not be celebrating this major accomplishment today.”

Planned Parenthood reported 402,200 abortions in its 2024 annual report and noted that government programs make up more than a third of its revenue — money that will now dry up, at least through next summer.
Pence reminded Johnson he was “the original author of legislation to defund Planned Parenthood nearly 20 years ago,” citing his 2007 Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, which would have barred federal family planning grants to any entity that performs abortions. “Our team at Advancing American Freedom looks forward to working with you to defend this milestone victory on the campaign trail as we work to make permanent the defunding of Planned Parenthood,” Pence wrote. “God Bless you, Mr. Speaker!”
Planned Parenthood did not respond to the Caller’s request for comment.
