WASHINGTON — The left may rue the day it embraced a “fusion of communism and Islam” under New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, a conservative policy expert told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
Mamdani’s movement could end up supercharging Islamist political influence over the Big Apple, Center for Renewing America senior advisor and veteran Wade Miller told the DCNF Tuesday at the National Conservatism Conference in Washington, D.C. The self-identified socialist Muslim and top contender for mayor shows how the “woke” left courts support from radical Muslims who ultimately are opposed to their socially liberal values, Miller said. “It is an extremely repressive culture that is teaming up with a very woke agenda, so seemingly very confusing. So, you have on the one hand, Islamist networks and on the other hand, far left, mostly white liberal voters who are for transgender agendas or for boys in girls’ sports,” Miller, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq, said.
“It doesn’t make sense unless you understand that those white liberals are being taken advantage of by people who have an agenda and want political power and so they will say what they want, they will do what they want,” Miller added. “But ultimately, both sides agree that the prevalent culture that underlies all of it has to be completely erased, and in this they find a common cause. And so they deal with each other.”
Mamdani’s support for causes such as the LGBTQ movement may contradict Islamic fundamentalists’ goals, but for now, they’re willing to unite with the left against the supposed ills of Western society. While marketing himself to Muslims, Mamdani has also pushed for government-funded sex-change “care” and attended an LGBTQ “Pride” rally in June.
Mamdani’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment from the DCNF.

The far-left candidate is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a group that credited his primary win in June with driving a boost in membership. The DSA’s political platform calls for social goals such as the “liberation of queer people” and decriminalizing prostitution, which is banned under Islamic governments such as Iran.
Simultaneously, Mamdani has courted anti-Israel Muslim voters while on the campaign trail. In May, a pro-Mamdani super PAC accepted a $1,000 donation from Siraj Wahhaj, an imam who has advocated for Islamic rule to replace America’s republican form of government, the DCNF previously reported. Wahhaj also defended a terror plot mastermind as a “strong preacher of Islam” in his 1995 trial and has endorsed Mamdani for mayor.
“The Islamist left kind of knows what they’re doing and they’re taking advantage of these networks in order to obtain power, and I think that that always becomes a problem,” Miller said.
Mamdani could embolden Islamic extremists to exercise more influence over American politics the more that the Muslim population increases, Miller told the DCNF.
“Once those populations start reaching ten, 13, 14% or start gaining political power, it changes very rapidly … that’s when you start seeing Islam really ramp up in radical terms, ’cause at that point, they kind of know that ‘you can’t get rid of us,’” Miller said. “I think that’s a direction that Mamdani and others are heading in.”
“It’s a fusion of communism and Islam in someone like Mamdani, and I think that nothing good will come out of that,” Miller told the DCNF. “I think New York will be the worse off for it.”
