FACT CHECK: BBC Did Not Report India Gave Territory To China

A post shared on Facebook claims the BBC reported India gave territory to China.

Fact Check:

Social media users are claiming that the BBC reported India gave territory to China. One user wrote, “#BREAKING: India unofficially surrendered 14,000 square kilometer land to China, BBC reports.” (RELATED: Was Trump’s Name Misspelled On Ballots In Ohio?)

This claim is false. Check Your Fact reviewed the BBC’s website and did not find any reporting that stated India gave territory to China, either officially or unofficially. A wider internet search also did not yield any results for the BBC reporting on this.

The BBC did report that China and India agreed to de-escalate tensions. It reported that Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that they made an agreement on “patrolling arrangements” in the Galwan Valley, where Indian and Chinese troops clashed with clubs and shields.

“An agreement has been arrived at on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the India-China border areas, leading to disengagement and a resolution of the issues that had arisen in these areas in 2020,” Misri said.

The BBC further reported that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese strongman Xi Jinping formally over the matter during the Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) summit in Moscow, Russia. The BBC reported that the two pledged to continue the dialogue.

A BBC spokesperson told Check Your Fact that “[w]e can’t find any reports on this.” This claim was also debunked by DFRAC.
