FACT CHECK: Did Danish Politicians Laugh When Trump Said He Wants To Buy Greenland?

A viral video shared on TikTok purports to show Danish politicians laughing when they hear President Donald Trump say he wants to buy Greenland.

@uptoknewsnow When Trump doubles down on buying Greenland in 2025, Denmark’s reaction is priceless. In 2019, Trump floated the idea of buying Greenland, and Denmark laughed it off. Fast forward to 2025, and he’s at it again—this time, sending high-profile delegations and ramping up pressure. Denmark’s response? A firm and resounding rejection, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen calling the U.S. actions “unacceptable pressure.” Greenland’s leaders are equally unimpressed, uniting against what they see as foreign interference. History repeats itself, but some offers are still off the table. #fyp #satire ♬ Originalton – RealDjMimo

Verdict: False

The video is from 2019 and predates Trump’s recent remarks about Greenland.

Fact Check:

Trump said the U.S. will “get Greenland,” according to USA Today. Although Trump did not rule out using military force to acquire the island territory, he said “there’s a good possibility that we could do it without military force, the outlet reported.

The TikTok video, which has received over 300,000 likes as of writing, purports to show Danish politicians laughing when they hear Trump say he wants to buy Greenland.

The video features a group of Danish politicians, including Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen laughing during a session of Parliament. What appears to be Trump’s voice can be heard in the background.

“I also have a message tonight for the incredible people of Greenland. We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America. We need Greenland for national security and even international security, and we’re working with everybody involved to try and get it. But we need it really for international world security. And I think we’re going to get it. One way or the other, we’re going to get it,” Trump appears to say.

“You can’t make this sh*t up! This is how Denmark reacted when Trump said he wanted to buy Greenland,” text superimposed on the video reads.

The claim is false. While the audio track of Trump is authentic and stems from his March 4 remarks before a joint session of Congress, the video of Frederiksen and the Danish politicians can be traced back to 2019. In the original video, Frederiksen laughed before the Danish parliament while delivering a statement on circus animals.

“Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen roared with laughter in the parliament session on October 3,” the video’s description reads.

Likewise, Trump does not appear to have publicly commented on the claim using his personal or government X accounts, his TRUTH Social account, or his verified social media accounts. The White House has not addressed the claim, either. (RELATED: Was MSNBC ‘Caught Using Leftist Plants’ To Pretend They Are Trump Voters With ‘Buyer’s Remorse?’)

In addition, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to support the claim. Actually, the opposite is true. On March 28, Lead Stories debunked the claim, indicating the video predated Trump’s recent remarks about Greenland. Besides Lead Stories, Logically Facts also debunked the claim.

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the prime minister of Greenland, recently pushed back against Trump’s calls for the U.S. to acquire the island territory, saying, “We decide our own future,” according to The Associated Press.
