FACT CHECK: Did Janet Yellen Resign As Treasury Secretary?

An image shared on Instagram claims U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen abruptly resigned from her position on Nov. 24.

Verdict: False

The claim is false. Neither the U.S. Treasury Department nor Yellen has publicly commented on the claim, and there is no other evidence to support the claim.

Fact Check:

President-elect Donald Trump has named hedge fund executive Scott Bessent as his nominee for U.S. Treasury Secretary, according to NBC News. Bessent will prioritize “election tax cut pledges,” Reuters reported, citing a recent interview between Bessent and The Wall Street Journal.

The Instagram image, which has received over 700 likes as of writing, claims Yellen abruptly resigned from her role as U.S. Treasury Secretary on Nov. 24.

“Breaking News: Janet Yellen, Treasury Secretary, Resigns Abruptly,” text that appears on the image reads. “Will there be some EXPLOSIVE news that comes out? Things seem to be heating up already!” the image’s caption claims.

The claim is false, however. Check Your Fact did not find the claim referenced on the U.S. Treasury Department’s website or its verified social media accounts. Likewise, Yellen does not appear to have publicly commented on the claim via her verified X account.

In fact, the opposite is true. On Nov. 25, Yellen shared a post of her and 76th U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob “Jack” Lew to the platform.

“It was an honor to unveil @USTreasury’s 76th Secretary Lew’s portrait. His leadership has left an indelible mark on the Department and the nation. This portrait reflects his legacy of service, integrity, and dedication,” Yellen wrote. Thus, the post suggests Yellen is still actively serving in her role as the current U.S. Treasury Secretary.

Additionally, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports suggesting Yellen had abruptly resigned from her role as U.S. Treasury Secretary. On Nov. 26, USA Today debunked the claim as false. (RELATED: No, Daily Mail Did Not Publish An Article Claiming Lindsey Graham Is A Pedophile)

Furthermore, neither the White House nor President Joe Biden have responded to the claim about Yellen’s purported resignation.
