FACT CHECK: Did Jimmy Kimmel Recently Claim He Was Leaving The Country?

A post shared on social media purports that comedian Jimmy Kimmel recently announced that he will be leaving the country after the election results.

The claim stems from satire.

Fact Check:

Republicans are now projected to keep control of the House of Representatives, but California still has ballots being counted, according to The Hill. This would give Republicans the House, the Senate and the White House.

A post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, claimed that Kimmel announced a decision to leave the country now that former President Donald Trump won the recent election. The post shared an image of Kimmel in a suit with text superimposed.

The text on the image reads, “Jimmy Kimmel Show Will be Cancelled On January 20th, ‘I’m Leaving And Never Coming Back.’”

The claim is inaccurate. The claim spread on satirical outlet SpaceXmania’s website and satirical account SpaceX Fanclub’s Facebook.

SpaceXmania’s website includes a disclaimer that states the outlet “does not make any warranties about the completeness, reliability, and accuracy of this information.” The site also has a “Satire” category that the article is tagged as.

SpaceX Fanclub’s Facebook page clearly identifies the claim as satire. The account shared a parody disclaimer in the bio that reads, “We post SATIRE, nothing on this page is real.”

Kimmel’s show’s Instagram account did feature a sketch that showed Kimmel packing to leave the country after hearing that Trump won. The sketch ended with Kimmel staying while Guillermo Rodriquez, a regular on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” decides to go to Mexico.

During  a recent show, Kimmel did break down talking about Trump’s victory saying, “it was a terrible night for women, for children, for the hundreds of thousands of hard-working immigrants who make this country go,” according to Rolling Stone.
