FACT CHECK: Does This Video Show Jan. 1, 2025 Traffic Accident?

A post shared on social media purportedly shows a video of a massive traffic accident on Jan. 1, 2025 in Texas.

Verdict: False

The footage is from an accident that occurred in February of 2021.

Fact Check:

Texas is expected to see a few inches of snow this week, according to Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Temperatures will likely drop below freezing and the state has already received advisories, the outlet reported.

A post shared on Instagram allegedly shows an accident that occurred on New Year’s Day. The video shows several cars and trucks hit each other before a large truck tries and fails to stop, sweeping another car with it.

The caption reads, “What is happening already in 2025.”

The video’s text overlay reads, “Fort Worth Texas Pile-up Jan 1 2025.”

The claim is inaccurate. The video dates back to 2021, as can be seen in a video shared by CNBC. The caption states that over 130 vehicles were involved in the accident.

The Dallas Morning News shared the video and reported that it took place on Feb. 2021. Six people were killed in the accident, according to the National Transportation Safety Board. The accident was the result of icy road conditions on the toll lanes of Interstate 35 West (I-35W) in Fort Worth, Texas, the report detailed. (RELATED: Did A Drone Crash Occur In New York City On Christmas Eve 2024)

This is not the first time miscaptioned media has been shared online. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim an image shows Mariupol being rebuilt by the Russians.
