FACT CHECK: Has Mexico Shut Down Its Border With The US Due To Recent Tariffs?

A viral video shared on X claims Mexico has purportedly shut down its border with the U.S. due to recent tariffs.

The video, which originally stems from YouTube and was published on Feb. 27, shows “protests happening on the Mexican side of the World Trade Bridge,” according to KGNS.

Fact Check:

President Donald Trump has granted an exemption on auto tariffs on Mexico and Canada for one month, according to CNN, who cited White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. The aim of the exemption is to bring automobile production back to the U.S., Leavitt said, the outlet reported.

The X video, viewed over two million times as of writing, claims Mexico has purportedly shut down its border with the U.S. due to recent tariffs.

“Mexico has shut down its border with [the] US due to tariffs taking effect today,” text superimposed on the video reads. In the video, a group of workers appear to close off access to the border using a gate. The video bears a label suggesting it was previously shared on TikTok.

The claim is false. The video originally stems from YouTube and was published on Feb. 27. According to its title, the video shows a closure on Bridge 240. Likewise, KGNS reported traffic delays occurred due to “protests happening on the Mexican side of the World Trade Bridge.” The outlet did not mention a link between the protests and tariffs, however.

In addition, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports suggesting Mexico has shut down its U.S. border due to recent tariffs. Actually, the opposite is true. On March 6, Lead Stories debunked the claim, citing the same report from KGNS.

Furthermore, a video streamed on YouTube by The Associated Press on March 4 showed a live view of the U.S.-Mexico border and it appeared to be open.

“Live from the Mexico-U.S. border after President Donald Trump’s long-threatened tariffs against Canada and Mexico went into effect Tuesday. Starting just past midnight, imports from Canada and Mexico are now to be taxed at 25%, with Canadian energy products subject to 10% import duties,” the video’s description reads in part.
