FACT CHECK: Mexico Did Not Break Off Relations With Canada

A post shared on Instagram claims Mexico broke off diplomatic relations with Canada.

Verdict: False

There is no evidence that Mexico and Canada broke off diplomatic relations.

Fact Check:

Social media users are claiming that Mexico broke off relations with Canada. It also claims that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo told Canada they could mine gold in Mexico.

“The Mexican government breaks off political relations with Canada and withdraws your permission to continue mining gold and minerals in the country,” the person narrating the video claims. (RELATED: Facebook Post Falsely Claims Disney Has Officially Bought TikTok)

This claim is false. No media outlets have reported on Mexico breaking off relations with Canada. There is also no evidence that there have been spats between Mexico and Canada on gold mining.

A search of the Mexican Embassy on Canada’s website also did not reveal any breaking down of relations between the two countries. Searches of Mexico’s Foreign Ministry and Global Affairs Canada website also did not yield any results for this claim.

Representatives for the Mexican Embassy, Global Affairs Canada, the Mexican President, and the Foreign Ministry of Mexico all told AFP Fact Check that diplomatic relations have continued.

President-elect Donald Trump’s threat to levy tariffs on Mexico and Canada has put a strain on the two countries’ ties, according to BBC News. Pardo told the Associated Press that “Mexico must be respected, especially by its trading partners,” per the outlet.
