FACT CHECK: No, China Did Not Raise Tariffs On US By 75%

A post shared on Facebook claims China raised tariffs on the United States by 75%.

Verdict: Misleading

The tariffs are 10-15%, not 75%.

Fact Check:

The U.S. announced it would place 10% tariffs on Chinese imports earlier this month, according to The Associated Press. China retaliated by placing tariffs on some U.S. goods, and stated it would investigate Google, per the outlet.

Social media users are claiming that China is retaliating with 75% tariffs on U.S. goods. One user wrote, “U.S. ECONOMIC STRUGGLE: China Hits Back With 75% Tariff In React To Trump’s 10% Tariff.”

This is misleading. Check Your Fact could not find any reporting that China announced it would hit the U.S. with 75% tariffs. Instead, it seems that China announced it would retaliate with 10-15% tariffs, not 75% tariffs. This was reported by the Associated Press and other outlets such as CNBC.

The People’s Republic of China’s State Council Tariff Commission stated it would impose “additional tariffs” in a Feb. 4 statement. (RELATED: Did Trump Sign An Executive Order Stopping All New Funds To The UNRWA?)

“1. A 15% tariff will be imposed on coal and liquefied natural gas…A 10% tariff will be imposed on crude oil, agricultural machinery, large-displacement cars and pickup trucks,” reads the statement.

Logically Facts also fact-checked this claim. Nearly $1.3 trillion worth of U.S. imports come from China, Mexico and Canada, according to the Council of Foreign Relations.
