FACT CHECK: No, Claudia Sheinbaum Did Not Make Purported ‘Rapists And Criminals’ Remark

An image shared on Threads claims Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum purportedly said the U.S. should stop electing “rapists and criminals.”

There is no evidence suggesting Sheinbaum made the purported remark.

Fact Check:

President Donald Trump recently agreed to pause proposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico for one month, according to The Associated Press. Trump threatened Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Sheinbaum with tariffs over concerns about border security and drug trafficking, the outlet reported.

The Threads image, which has received over 600 likes as of writing, claims Sheinbaum purportedly said the U.S. should stop electing “rapists and criminals.” The image features two quotes, one attributed to Trump and the other to Sheinbaum.

“Trump: ‘I just had a conversation with President Sheinbaum, of Mexico. She will stop rapists and criminals from coming here,’” the quote attributed to Trump reads.

“Sheinbaum: ‘I told President Trump the best way to make rapists and criminals feel unwelcome in the US, is for their citizens to stop electing them,’” the quote attributed to Sheinbaum follows.

The claim is false, however. Check Your Fact reviewed the Mexican government’s website and did not find any press releases referencing the purported remark. Likewise, Sheinbaum does not appear to have publicly commented on the purported remark via her verified social media accounts. Trump has not referenced the claim, either. In addition, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to support the claim. Actually, the opposite is true. On Feb. 10, Logically Facts debunked the claim. The outlet noted that Sheinbaum did not reference the purported remark in a recent post shared on X, formerly Twitter, summarizing a conversation she had with Trump about pausing tariffs.
