However, the origin appears to be satire. No outlet has reportedly credibly that Denmark has offered to buy California for a trillion dollars. The outlets that covered this alleged news noted it was a joke petition started on Denmarkification, according to USA Today.

“Have you ever looked at a map and thought, ‘You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates. Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality. Logically Facts also debunked the claim. A spokesperson for the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the outlet that the claim “seems to be satire, since Denmark has not offered to buy California.”
