A post shared on Threads claims that France demanded $150 trillion for helping the United States during its war of independence.

Verdict: False

There is no evidence for this claim.

Fact Check:

Social media users are claiming that France is demanding $150 trillion in interest for helping the U.S. during its war of independence.

“France now says U.S. independence funding was a loan, and is now demanding $150 trillion in interest,” one post reads. (RELATED: Did Trump Make An X Post With A Referral Link Providing A Discount On Tesla Purchases?)

This claim is false. No credible news outlets have reported that France is demanding $150 trillion in interest. The image appears to be from French President Emmanuel Macron’s speech where he called for European rearmament. He did not call for the U.S. to pay $150 trillion in loan interest.

The U.S. was heavily supplied by France with weapons, ammunition, money (loans) and other supplies during the American Revolution, according to the State Department’s Office of the Historian. France also contributed tens of thousands of troops, ships and helped the U.S. win the decisive battle of Yorktown over British forces in 1781. The loans were settled in 1795.

A French Embassy spokesperson told Logically Facts that the claim was incorrect.
