A post shared on X claims the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) admitted that 6,000 troops were killed.

It seems like the IOF chief of staff admitted to the resistance killing nearly 6,000 soldiers 😳

Verdict: False

It is said that 6,000 people have become “bereaved family members” of IDF troops killed in battle.

Fact Check:

Social media users are claiming that the IDF admitted that 6,000 troops were killed. One user wrote, “It seems like the IOF chief of staff admitted to the resistance killing nearly 6,000 soldiers… This is from their official Facebook account.”

This claim is false. Bereaved family members include “mother, father, grandfather, grandmother, widower, widow, brother, sister, son, daughter,” according to the IDF. The IDF still lists fewer than a thousand dead, not 6,000, according to its website.

Tal Hagin, a research fellow at FakeReporter, debunked the claim in a Feb. 12 tweet. (RELATED: Did Trump Sign An Executive Order Stopping All New Funds To The UNRWA?)

No, the Ministey of Defense didn’t admit to nearly 6,000 IDF soldiers being killed in the past year.

The post (made clearer in Hebrew) by the MOD states that there are 5,942 new people classified as bereaved family members.

“No, the Ministey of Defense didn’t admit to nearly 6,000 IDF soldiers being killed in the past year. The post (made clearer in Hebrew) by the MOD states that there are 5,942 new people classified as bereaved family members. Who is defined as a bereaved family family of one of the 891 IDF soldiers killed? Parents, grandparents, spouse, siblings & children,” reads Hagin’s tweet.

We rate this claim false.
