FACT CHECK: No, Trump Didn’t Ban All Nigerian Politicians From Entering The US

A post shared on Facebook claims President Donald Trump banned all Nigerian politicians from entering the United States.

Verdict: False

There is no evidence Trump banned all Nigerian politicians from entering the U.S.

Fact Check:

Social media users are claiming that Trump banned all Nigerian politicians from entering the U.S. and ordered the freezing of their bank accounts. One user wrote, “Breaking news: Trump has imposed a ban preventing all Nigerian politicians from visiting the U.S. for any reason President Donald Trump has also ordered the freezing of Nigerian international bank accounts. Additionally, over 2 million Nigerians are said to be facing “`deportation“` starting Wednesday.”

There is no evidence for these claims. If Trump had done these actions, media outlets would have covered it, yet none have. Daniel Bwala, a special communications adviser for the Nigerian president, told AFP Fact Check the claims were “baseless.”

“The claims are not only baseless but also lazy. Under international law, if you are proclaiming sanction, it must be stated in specifics and not blanket. Our diplomatic relationship with the US is intact and the federal government did not receive such,” the Bwala told the outlet.

If Trump had frozen all the Nigerian international bank accounts, the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control would have noted it. It did not note any actions taken against the Nigerian bank accounts or Nigeria itself. (RELATED: No, Video Does Not Show Trump Signing Executive Order On Crypto)

There is no evidence that there are 2 million Nigerians facing deportation. The Institute for Immigration Research at George Mason University states that there are fewer than 400,000 Nigerian immigrants in the U.S.
