FACT CHECK: Quote About Heaven, Trump Attributed To Jimmy Carter Is Satirical
SHARE

A post shared on Facebook claims former President Jimmy Carter purportedly said, “an eternity without [President-Elect Donald] Trump is the greatest gift of all.”

Verdict: False

The claim is false and originally stems from a Jan. 9 satire post shared by Andy Borowitz via his Substack newsletter, “The Borowitz Report.”

Fact Check:

Carter’s funeral took place at Washington National Cathedral on Jan. 9, according to NBC News. All five living current and former presidents attended the funeral, the outlet reported.

The Facebook post claims Carter purportedly said, “an eternity without Trump is the greatest gift of all.”

“In a wide-ranging interview on Thursday, former President Jimmy Carter said that the best part of Heaven ‘by far’ is the knowledge that he will never see Donald J. Trump again. ‘Don’t get me wrong, I’m very grateful for the gift of eternal life,’ he said. ‘But an eternity without Trump is the greatest gift of all,’” the post reads in part.

The claim is false and originally stems from a Jan. 9 satire post shared by Borowitz via his Substack newsletter, “The Borowitz Report.” According to his “About” page, Borowitz describes himself as a writer and comedian who has been “writing satirical news since [he] was eighteen.”

Likewise, Check Your Fact did not find the claim referenced on the Carter Center’s website or its associated social media accounts. Trump does not appear to have publicly commented on the claim, either.

In addition, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to support the claim. Actually, the opposite is true. On Jan. 14, Snopes debunked the claim, tracing it back to Borowitz’s newsletter. (RELATED: Donald Trump Tweet About Tony Robinson Is Fake)

On Dec. 29, The Washington Post reported Carter, who served as the 39th U.S. President, had died at the age of 100.

Check Your Fact has contacted the Carter Center for comment.
