FACT CHECK: Threads Post Makes False Claim About LAFD, Electric Fire Trucks
SHARE

A post shared on Threads claims the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) has 45 electric fire trucks that take 10 hours to recharge.

Verdict: False

The LAFD has not issued a press release or social media statement responding to the claim. In addition, USA Today, Snopes, and The Dispatch have all labeled the claim as false.

Fact Check:

The Eaton fire is 99% contained, according to Forbes, which cited Cal Fire. At least 29 people have died as a result of recent California wildfires, including the Eaton fire, ABC News reported.

The Threads post claims the LAFD has 45 electric fire trucks that take 10 hours to recharge.

“[Forty-five] of Los Angeles fire trucks have to go back to the fire department for 10 hours a day to recharge instead of fighting fires after refueling in 7 minutes,” the post begins. “This is why electric vehicles don’t belong anywhere near public safety services,” it continues. The post does not provide a source to support its claim.

The claim is false. The LAFD does not appear to have issued a press release or social media statement responding to the claim. (RELATED: Viral Image Of Rainbow Fire Hydrant Is AI-Generated)

Likewise, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to support the claim. Actually, the opposite is true. USA Today, Snopes, and The Dispatch all labeled the claim as false.

Margaret Stewart, a spokesperson for the LAFD, denied the claim’s validity in an email to USA Today.

“There are not 45 electric fire trucks in Los Angeles across all of the fire departments,” Stewart said, according to the outlet. Stewart also told the outlet that the LAFD does not have any electric fire trucks, but one electric fire engine, which is a different type of vehicle.

In addition, Snopes traced the source of the claim to a Jan. 18 post shared on Facebook by the satirical page “America’s Last Line Of Defense.”

Check Your Fact has contacted Stewart for comment.
