FACT CHECK: UK Is Talking About Deploying Peacekeepers To Ukraine, Not Active Intervention

A post shared on X claims the United Kingdom said it was talking about deploying troops to Ukraine.

Verdict: Misleading

The UK’s Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, said the country might send peacekeepers to Ukraine as part of a peace deal.

Fact Check:

Social media users are claiming that the UK is talking about deploying troops to Ukraine and widening the conflict. One user wrote, “UK is talking about sending combat troops and aircraft to ukraine!!!!! trump will be the reason for a larger war in europe it looks like.”

This claim is misleading. Starmer wrote in the Telegraph that he could send troops to Ukraine as part of a peace deal, not actively intervene in the war.

Starmer writes:

“But it also means being ready and willing to contribute to security guarantees to Ukraine by putting our own troops on the ground if necessary. I do not say that lightly. I feel very deeply the responsibility that comes with potentially putting British servicemen and women in harm’s way. But any role in helping to guarantee Ukraine’s security is helping to guarantee the security of our continent, and the security of this country. The end of this war, when it comes, cannot merely become a temporary pause before Putin attacks again.”

Nowhere in the Telegraph piece does he say the UK will intervene in the Russian invasion of Ukraine militarily. Check Your Fact did not find any reporting that Starmer intends to intervene in the current conflict.
