FACT CHECK: Viral Threads Image Does Not Show Authentic X Post From Musk
SHARE

A viral image shared on Threads purports to show an X post from Elon Musk claiming the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team found “tens of millions of dollars spent on golf by one government official.”

Verdict: False

The purported post cannot be found via an advanced search of Musk’s verified X account @elonmusk, and there is no other evidence suggesting he made the post.

Fact Check:

Musk will remain a “friend and an adviser” to President Donald Trump once he leaves his role at DOGE, according to The Guardian, which quoted remarks from Vice President J.D. Vance. Musk’s service in the Trump administration is capped at 130 days, the outlet reported.

The Threads image, which has received over 8,000 likes as of writing, purports to show an X post from Musk claiming the DOGE team “tens of millions of dollars spent on golf by one government official.”

“Unbelievable. The DOGE team has discovered TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS spent on GOLF by a SINGLE GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL. Stay tuned for when we figure out who it is,” the text of the purported X post reads.

The claim is false. Check Your Fact performed an advanced search of Musk’s verified X account @elonmusk and did not find any reference to the purported remark. The claim neither appears on DOGE’s website nor its verified X account @DOGE. Trump also does not appear to have publicly commented on the claim using his personal or government X accounts, his TRUTH Social account, or his verified social media accounts.

In addition, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to support the claim. If DOGE had truly made the purported discovery, multiple media outlets would’ve covered it, yet none have. Actually, the opposite is true. On April 3, Lead Stories debunked the claim, indicating the post is “fake.” (RELATED: Did Warren Buffett Buy Tesla Stock For $1 Trillion In Cash?)

This is not the first time a false claim involving Musk has circulated online. Check Your Fact previously debunked a Facebook post claiming Musk is in talks to buy the Cincinnati Bengals.
