FACT CHECK: Viral X Video Does Not Authentically Show US Military Vehicles Patrolling The Border

The video, which originally stems from TikTok, has been created with artificial intelligence (AI). The user who shared the video is an “AI creator,” according to his bio. In addition, an AI expert denied the video’s authenticity in an email to Check Your Fact.

Fact Check:

President Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, told Pope Francis to focus on “fixing the Catholic Church” after the pontiff criticized Trump’s plans for mass deportation, according to Newsweek. Pope Francis referred to Trump’s plans for mass deportations as a “disgrace,” the outlet reported.

The X video, which has received over 900,000 views as of writing, purports to show U.S. military vehicles patrolling the border. “Our Military is now securing America’s Borders instead of foreign countries,” the video’s caption reads. The video appears to bear a label indicating it originally stems from TikTok.

The claim is false. The video, which was first posted to TikTok by user @bizaroearthling, is AI-generated. The user describes himself as an “AI creator” who shares “Positive & Dark Improvisation, Parody and Satire” content via his bio. A watermark that appears in the video’s top right corner reveals the video was likely created with PixVerse.ai, a generative AI platform. A review of the same user’s TikTok account shows he has created multiple AI-generated videos focusing on the border.

Likewise, Check Your Fact did not find any credible news reports to support the claim. In fact, the opposite is true. On Jan. 24, Lead Stories reported the video was AI-generated and traced the video back to the same TikTok account. (RELATED: Video Showing Migrants Breaking Through Police Line Is From 2023)

Furthermore, Dr. Walter Scheirer, an AI expert at the University of Notre Dame, denied the video’s authenticity in an email to Check Your Fact.

“This is a badly rendered video that is likely the product of a generative AI system. The overall scene is cartoon-like in appearance, and contains several obvious artifacts. For instance, several soldiers instantly appear on the back of the lead vehicle at 0:03, and there is an unnatural haze around the drones in the sky. Further, there appears to be a sedan in the convoy that has a malformed windshield,” Scheirer said.

Although the video is AI-generated, the U.S. Army “has told units to prepare for deployment in anticipation of a decision to further increase U.S. military presence at the U.S.-Mexico border,” CBS News reported on Jan. 25.
