Progressive activist organizations are pushing Democrats to “keep fighting” against Republicans in Congress amid a funding conflict and resulting government shutdown.
Grassroots groups including the Working Families Party, MoveOn, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, and some unions are engaged in a pressure campaign to mobilize activist networks in support of the Democrats’ funding blockade, Axios reported Thursday.
Call scripts obtained by Axios show progressive groups urging Democrats to keep the government shut down, using public pressure as leverage against Republicans.
“I’m calling to encourage Senator _________ to hold the line during this shutdown and keep fighting against Trump’s health care cuts and price increases,” reads a Working Families Party script.

“Thank your Senator for continuing to hold the line on healthcare against Republicans’ cuts,” says another script for MoveOn members.
“Your Senator just voted against making healthcare affordable for families. Tell them to do better and fight for us,” says a MoveOn script for GOP legislators.
The Working Families Party is an organization founded in 1998 whose mission is to “recruit and train people-powered candidates up and down the ballot” in advocacy of the working class.
“[T]he richest people on Earth — and the political insiders who serve them — have rigged the rules of our economy and our democracy to grab up wealth and power for themselves,” their website states. “We’re a multiracial party that fights for workers over bosses and people over the powerful.” (RELATED: Democrats Double Down On Shutdown Despite Americans’ Healthcare Programs Lapsing)

Also founded in 1998, MoveOn is a similar political mobilization group that works to elect candidates aligned with their goal of an “inclusive and progressive future.”
“Since immediately after the election of Donald Trump, MoveOn members have served as a pillar of the Resistance Movement,” MoveOn’s website says. “We envision a world marked by equality, sustainability, justice, and love. And we mobilize together to achieve it.”
The Progressive Change Campaign Committee is an electoral and issue advocacy group that “has raised over $40 million in grassroots donations for progressive candidates and committees, trained thousands of state and local candidates, and elected dozens of bold progressives to Congress,” according to its website.
