FBI Director Christopher Wray resigned from his position on Wednesday, multiple outlets reported.
Fox News first reported that Wray stepped down amidst rumors that he was planning to resign. Then-President Donald Trump nominated Christopher Wray to direct the FBI in 2017.

Wray reportedly resigned to avoid being fired by Trump upon taking office for his second term. Deputy Director Paul Abbate will now become acting director of the FBI.
“Well, I can’t say I’m thrilled with him,” Trump told NBC’s Kristen Walker during an interview Friday. “He invaded my home — I’m suing the country over it. He invaded Mar-a-Lago.”
Trump called Wray’s resignation “a great day for America” on his platform, Truth Social. (RELATED: Seven GOP Senators Most Likely To Stand Between Trump And His Dream Cabinet)
“The resignation of Christopher Wray is a great day for America as it will end the Weaponization of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice,” he stated. “I just don’t know what happened to him.”
Wray has faced backlash due to his handling of the investigations into Hunter Biden and the first attempted assassination of Trump.
Wray previously refused to answer whether he would work with Republican Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley’s oversight of how the bureau handled information about the Biden’s foreign business deals.
During the investigation into the attempted assassination in July, Wray told Congress there were “some questions” about whether it was a “bullet or shrapnel” that struck Trump. The FBI clarified to the Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF) that a bullet hit Trump’s ear.
Wray was also questioned over the FBI’s potential role in social media censorship. (RELATED: Rumored Trump FBI Candidate Mike Rogers Has History Of Feeding Into Russiagate, FISA Spying)
“Twitter Files” journalist Michael Shellenberger testified in 2023 that Wray “misled” Congress on the FBI’s relationship with social media sites to censor online speech. Republican Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul questioned Wray on the FBI’s coordination with social media platforms.
Trump’s nominee for FBI director, Kash Patel, is meeting with Republican senators on Capitol Hill this week.
Trump announced last month that Patel, former Chief of Staff to the Secretary of Defense, would be his nominee. He will work under Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Pam Bondi.
