The FBI is reportedly investigating its own actions targeting President Donald Trump during previous administrations to reveal whether they amount to a “grand conspiracy” to illegally influence U.S. elections, according to a report from Just the News.
The Trump administration’s reported probe spans from the FBI’s weaponization of false claims of Russian collusion in the 2016 elections to its classified documents case against Trump that led to a 2023 indictment, Just the News reported Sunday, citing sources familiar with the matter. The reported investigation could pave the way for a potential Trump-appointed special counsel to file criminal charges, according to the outlet. The Trump administration launched the inquiry several weeks ago under FBI Director Kash Patel, Just the News reported. The FBI did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment, and the Department of Justice (DOJ) declined to comment.
Two troves of classified evidence could be key to jumpstarting the probe if Trump declassifies them, according to Just the News’s sources.
The Trump administration possesses potentially relevant evidence in classified records that may show the FBI ignored wrongdoing in its probe of former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton for improperly using a private email server as secretary of state to share sensitive government information, Just the News reported. Another batch of classified information contains details about “Clinton plan intelligence” the FBI used to justify investigating Trump, the report said.
Federal officials under former President Barack Obama began investigating claims that Trump colluded with Russia to win the presidency based on faulty intelligence funded by Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee (DNC). The probe involved multiple attempts to surveil Trump and his 2016 campaign, and former Special Counsel John Durham later found such efforts to be factually baseless in a lengthy 2023 report.
Fox News previously reported that Trump’s FBI is criminally investigating former intelligence community leaders involved in driving the Trump-Russia probe.
Ahead of the 2020 election, the FBI primed social media platforms to censor content about Hunter Biden’s laptop as so-called Russian disinformation. The FBI knew before the election that the laptop, which revealed details about the former first son’s sordid lifestyle and foreign business ties, was legitimate. Republicans have long alleged that the FBI’s actions were meant to improperly sway the election in favor of former President Joe Biden.
Conservatives have also accused the Biden administration’s law enforcement officials of interfering in the 2024 election by waging unprecedented prosecutions of Trump on charges of mishandling classified documents and conspiring to steal the 2020 election. Former Special Counsel Jack Smith dropped his cases in November 2024 after Trump won reelection.
